i read this and found it interesting. i know this winter 'round these parts were cold and we got lots more snow, in fact locals are worried about the spring melt flooding the towns because we have so much mountain snow.

el nino or a changing of the tide?

Don't worry turbo, the wacko leftists saw this coming. That's why they changed their "global warming" predictions to "climate change". With "climate change", they can blame humans regardless of what the weather does. In fact, I'm predicting here and now that the wackos will change their terminology again to "climate change and/or climate stagnation". That way, Up, Down, or Sideways - they're covered!

Even if all this climate stuff turns out to be solar activity, the wackos will claim that it's man's fault!

no no no PM, The new term was discussed last month at the wacko leftist convention (WLC for short) and we decided that to be more modern we are going to call it 'Global Stagflation'!

An ice age will happen TK. When the pendulum starts swinging it goes to both sides of the spectrum before it comes to rest. A warming trend 'globally' will happen first but there will be areas of the globe that see an increase in extreme weather(i.e. increased snowfall, arctic blasts, severe thunderstorms) as well during this time. The warming trend is what will eventually become the catalyst for the next ice age.

I do say the weather ways of the last 6 months have been curious to say the least. It will be interesting to see what summer brings.

I am not above admitting that if solar levels decline it could have a larger affect in our climatology than man made pollutants. Same thing if the Super Volcano were to blow at Yellowstone.

But I am not prepared to say that one winter equals and trend reversal. It could just be that this is a taste of the dramatic swings in temp that we have to look forward to in the future since we have unbalanced global systems with our need for fossil fuels.

P.S. I don't know that they have correctly accounted for wind in their systems but I am glad to read that they are taking it more seriously. It is a hard force to predict and I think it plays a more important role than they have been willing to admit in the past.

the temperatures on the ground do not matter.

here's where the temps matter:

 -

The thermosphere, named from the Greek θερμός (thermos) for heat, begins about 80 km above the earth. At these high altitudes, the residual atmospheric gases sort into strata according to molecular mass (see turbosphere). Thermospheric temperatures increase with altitude due to absorption of highly energetic solar radiation by the small amount of residual oxygen still present. Temperatures are highly dependent on solar activity, and can rise to 2,000°C. Radiation causes the air particles in this layer to become electrically charged (see ionosphere), enabling radio waves to bounce off and be received beyond the horizon. At the exosphere, beginning at 500 to 1,000km above the earth's surface, the atmosphere blends into space.

The mesosphere (from the Greek words mesos = middle and sphaira = ball) is the layer of the Earth's atmosphere that is directly above the stratosphere and directly below the thermosphere. The mesosphere is located from about 50 km to 80-90 km altitude above Earth's surface. Within this layer, temperature decreases with increasing altitude.[1] The main dynamical features in this region are atmospheric tides, internal atmospheric gravity waves (usually just called "gravity waves") and planetary waves. Most of these waves and tides are excited in the troposphere and lower stratosphere and propagate upward to the mesosphere. In the mesosphere, gravity-wave amplitudes can become so large that the waves become unstable and dissipate. This dissipation deposits momentum into the mesosphere and largely drives its global circulation.

The stratosphere is layered in temperature because it is heated from above by absorption of ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. Within this layer, temperature increases as altitude increases (see temperature inversion); the top of the stratosphere has a temperature of about 270 K (−3°C or 26.6°F), just slightly below the freezing point of water. This top is called the stratopause, above which temperature again decreases with height. The vertical stratification, with warmer layers above and cooler layers below, makes the stratosphere dynamically stable: there is no regular convection and associated turbulence in this part of the atmosphere. The heating is caused by an ozone layer that absorbs solar ultraviolet radiation, heating the upper layers of the stratosphere. The base of the stratosphere occurs where heating by conduction from above and heating by convection from below (through the troposphere) balance out; hence, the stratosphere begins at lower altitudes near the poles due to the lower ground temperature there.

The troposphere is the lowest portion of Earth's atmosphere. It contains approximately 75% of the atmosphere's mass and almost all of its water vapor and aerosols.

The average depth of the troposphere is about 11 km (7 miles) in the middle latitudes. It is deeper in the tropical regions (up to 20 km (12 miles)) and shallower near the poles (about 7 km (4 miles) in summer, indistinct in winter). The lowest part of the troposphere, where friction with the Earth's surface influences air flow, is the planetary boundary layer. This layer is typically a few hundred meters to 2 km (1.2 miles) deep depending on the landform and time of day. The border between the troposphere and stratosphere, called the tropopause, is a temperature inversion.[1]

what we are currently seeing is like a glass of ice taken from the freezer and set on the table in the kitchen.

the surface of the glass is very cold. there is water condensing on it and that condensation can even freeze.

(the SURFACE of the ocean is cooling due to the ice water draining off the polar regions)

the glass of ice actually makes the table top cold and wet...

for awhile it does anyway...

after awhile? the glass of ice is melted and at room temp.

later the water evaporates back off the outside of the glass and the table...

this dramatic drop and bad weather is a sign that the rate of change may be increasing dramatically

The truth is that this drop in temperature may or may not mean anything. Even if there were convincing evidence that global warming was just a big mistake and that the sun is actually causing any change in weather, the wacko left is going to fight it. They've already made a stand that man is the root of all evil with respect to the environment and they won't change that easily.

If we believe the scientists, the earth has been warmer and colder than it is now. I've seen programs on the discovery channel (and others) that claim the transition from a warm climate to the little ice age may have occurred in only a few years.

Here's a little secret: the climate is ALWAYS CHANGING! Live with it!

you see? the r real problem is that not as much of the suns radiation is being allowed back into space.

it's not speculation, we know this, and it's kinds like putting a magnifying glass on an anthill...

I don't know . My rememberance of ice fishing with my father was that we froze, and all my father would let us bring was a piece of cardboard so we didn't stick to the ice. It was always a good time though.

There's an article in the newspaper today that says NASA scientists have determined that the artic ice coverage is about back to normal. So much for global warming!

Does anyone feel silly that they were duped by the Al (I invented the internet) Gore and his socialist clan. This entire thing was about creating a panic for the purpose of promoting global socialism - it had nothing to do with the weather.

global socialism eh? I can think of at least 6 new industries that have popped up due to global warming and only one of them is subsidized. And that one is only popular because it uses #2 corn which our agricultural system has been promoting to the detriment of our farmers and livestock for 50 years now.

Fat Lady hasn't sung on this one yet PM. Be patient. You will see.

Glass, where did you come up with that cup of ice analogy earlier in the thread? That was good!

More on global warming debate

BILL STEIGERWALD
Cagle Cartoon columnist

You’ve no doubt seen the stories about strange snowfalls in Saudi Arabia. A brutal winter in China. The heaviest snow cover in North America, Siberia and elsewhere since 1966.

And if you are a vigilant observer of the global warming debate, you know how inconveniently cold it is in the Arctic this winter for Al Gore and his army of climate alarmists.

But how cold is it, Johnny?

Well, NASA says recent satellite images show that the allegedly endangered polar ice cap — which will melt completely one of these summers and kill off all the polar bears if we don’t slash our greedy carbon footprints and revert to the lifestyles of medieval peasants — has recovered to near normal coverage levels.

are you so blind you can't even read who wrote it?
LOL....

futhermore? it says:

That’s what Josefino Comiso, a senior research scientist with the Cryospheric Sciences Branch of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, told Canada’s CBC News — the Canadian government’s version of NPR/PBS — on Feb. 12.

As far as Google’s search engine knows, Comiso’s comforting report has appeared nowhere but in Canada.

it gets better propman:

President Vaclav Klaus of the Czech Republic is scheduled to speak Tuesday. Klaus, who knows what it is to live under a mindless tyranny, thinks he knows the motives of warm-mongers like Gore. He sees an eerie similarity between communism and what he calls the global warming "religion."

In the June 14 Financial Times he wrote: "As someone who lived under communism for most of his life, I feel obliged to say that I see the biggest threat to freedom, democracy, the market economy and prosperity now in ambitious environmentalism, not communism. This ideology wants to replace the free and spontaneous evolution of mankind by a sort of central (now global) planning."

If Marx and Lenin were alive today, they'd be environmentalists

the only Scientific comment i can find mentioning the actual condition of the arctic ice is that it is 10 to 20 centimeters thicker than LAST winter... which is due to snowing...
