where is our war spending going?

Between April 2003 and January 5, 2006 there were 290 recorded attacks on Iraq's hydrocarbon and energy infrastructure including the nation's 6 960km-long pipeline system and 17 600km11,000km-long power grid according to the US-based Institute for the Analysis of Global Security (IAGS), an independent organisation that monitors energy and security issues.

The US military continues to guard the energy infrastructure, and under a $100-million joint contract with South African security firm Erinys International, about 14 000 mainly Iraqi personnel have also been trained to guard the sector, the EIA report said. In addition, Florida-based AirScan conducts air surveillance of the pipelines.

hmmm.. south african?

Erinys International is a British security company founded in 2001.[1] The word "Erinys" referring to the avenging deities in Greek religion, Erinys International employs experts in the petrolium, mining, power generation, and telecommunications industries.

In August 2003, Erinys Iraq Ltd. (a branch of Erinys International) won a contract to train 6,500 guards and protect 140 oil wells, 7,000 pipelines, power plants and water providers for the Iraqi Ministry of Oil. In December of the same year, they gained another contract (subcontract to Florida-based AirScan, Inc.) for aerial pipeline surveillance. Currently, Erinys has regional operations in Mosul, Kirkuk, Baghdad, and Basrah.[4] In 2004, the company was responsible for an Iraqi security force of 14,000 personnel.[5] Erinys Iraq also holds sub-contracts to protect American companies like Halliburton's subsidiary Kellogg, Brown, and Root (KBR).[6]
It was reported in November 2006 that traces of Polonium 210 were detected at Erinys's Grosvenor Street premises in London, following the death by poisoning of former KGB officer, Alexander Litvinenko.[7]

the reason i bring this up in particular is because they haven't been able to properly protect the oil infrastructure.

i beleive that 90% of the problems in Iraq would solve themselves if the oil would flow.

the people there would have an economy of hope.

sure, they'd still have some people that become terrorists like the Saudis have.

LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Iraq's oil minister said his government is determination to pass a draft oil law this year, adding he hopes to ramp up production to 2.9 mln barrels per day by the end of the year.

'We hope 2008 will see the enactment of the oil and gas law,' Hussein Shahristani said, on the sidelines of a conference here.

Having been unable to negotiate long-term contracts with the Iraqi government, major energy companies have instead hammered out technical support deals.

Shahristani said the technical support contracts would be associated with long-term oil deals, but did not give details on the link between the two.

Iraq currently produces about 2.4 mln barrels of oil per day, and exports approximately 2 mln barrels, above the levels of production before the US-led invasion of the country in April 2003, thanks to 'significant improvements recently (in security)', the minister said.

its a lost cause unless the people step up to the plate. they ARE, but it is very slow. i think a lot of people need to see how beat down of a society they are. they havent even really discovered themselves or true freedom yet. they will get the hang of it and then the locals will do whatever it takes to kick the bad guys out of their area. they did it in ramadi which was a city i was in my first tour. it was HORRIBLE...nasty nasty place. aside from the violence it was just a dump. now, the locals stepped up to the plate and said no more. tribal leaders and elders sent their men into the police ranks and other local enforcement forces and kicked the bad guys out. if it can happen in ramadi it can happen anywhere.

oil needs to flow big time from there. if they get to the point of maximum production of oil they can live like the kuwaitis. ive been all over kuwait and there are some really really nice areas just like in the states. shopping malls, modern everything, bmw's and upscale model cars and SUVs all over the place. you all know about dubai right? iraqi oil could really help that country out.....maybe help US out too!
