Michael Vic received a 23 month sentence today for his involvement in the dog fighting ring?
Do you think that is a reasonable sentence?
Personally, I think it is ridiculous. I am an animal lover, but I think 23 months is much too long and combined with the HUGE amount of money he has lost and will lose is a ridiculous sentence. Hardened criminals often don't get that long of a sentence for burglary, robbery, or dealing drugs. Is his crime as bad as a hardened criminal who is a threat to society?
I'll bet some hillbilly here in Ohio that was convicted of dog-fighting would get probation.

So?
He's not "some hillbilly . . . " He *was* a fabulously wealthy NFL star, therefore -- like it or not -- an icon to and influencer of youth, who did not merely participate but also financed the operation. Then, he lied and played dumb at almost every fork in the road.
Jeez, even if you're from some culture that accepts producing life n' death animal contests, why in the world would you torture those "weaker"? Shoot, I kill roaches--but I don't torture 'em...

I agree with you that dog fighting is terrible and he should be punished. However, he is losing a LOT. Twenty three months in prison, loss of more than 100 million dollars, probably all his property; and his living. Some hillbilly doing the same thing here in Ohio probably wouldn't lose much of anything but a few months on probation. That doesn't seem fair to me.

i agree. he should be required to do community service...
his open contrition and community service could make a huge difference to alot of young people...
we have real problems in this part of the country with pitbull fighters. the local govts have passed strict laws on how they must be housed, and i don't see them chained out (by the dozens) any more.. i'm sure there's still fighting, but it's not so obvious at least....

ahh, ahhh, ahhhhh...
You're leaving out the torture aspect. AND being a ring-leader...
It's not as though some wealthy, bored celeb got caught "wandering" into a seamy-side-of-life situation, just for kicks and screams...
I concede, I do not know how much he banked before getting popped, but if he doesn't have any of that stashed away... then he's simply another one of those deadbeats you're ready to kick down the levee and watch 'em float downriver...
weird how you seem ready to kick in the teeth any regular Jo who's down on their luck, but let some over-rated, over-paid athlete get in a jam and you're all about compassion...

I would never evict Vick (kick down the levee and watch him float downriver). In fact, I wouldn't rent to him. I don't rent to convicted felons.
I don't feel compassion for him, I simply don't think the sentence is fair. An ordinary person would not get this type of sentence, so why should he?
Your "hillbilly" is not a role model for nationwide youth...
Yes, he's losing a lot: He RISKED a lot. He LOST--he got caught, SPITTING IN THE FACE of American, even global, youth... His message was: Look, kids, all you need is talent, which grants million$, and you can do whatever you want, including TORTURING innocent animals...
Mike, listen...I had a youth program for inner-city, at-risk kids for years. We were strikingly successful at keeping them on the field, off dope, in school, and outta gangs. It may not seem like it, but those kids *do* pay attention to what gets rewarded and what gets punished...
make sense?
btw...

see, this makes NO sense...
You think he got too harsh a sentence, yet even if he learns his lesson, you won't rent to him...
seriously? you sound like Scrooge...

With these celebrities you never know which way it will go, sometimes they use them as an example. Usually they end up getting a better sentence than the average joe(or above average) will get.

It ain't the notoriety he admires and respects so, Tex, it's the loot.
Them that's got it, he excuses, praises, and thinks they's his kind....sees 'em without seein the warts.....their farts don't stink, at least ta him, ya know.
Them that ain't got it, it don't matter what they look like or what smell like, 'cause he don't bother t' look, them he labels as lazy wacko socialist deadbeats (and he does it at the top of hus lungs).
