No doubt you believe the viability of that play.

But in reality, in 1973, the "boy" either marries the "girl", Mary, and both are kicked out of school forever or, often at the insistance of Mary's parrents, the boy is forbidden to ever see mary again, which is just as well, since Mary dies days after the coat hanger abortion.

Through it all and to this day, Mary's parents never tell what actually she died of and never admit that it was their choice to refuse to allow Mary to get a perscription for the pill. They still describe her as a devoted and seriously religious little girl that was taught that abstainence is the only necessary method for young girls to avoid getting pregnant.

You see, I knew this mary and her parents and I shall never forgive myself for insisting she tell her parents when she stopped in my office for advice.

Then there was a Diane and a Marie. They didn't die, but their lives were more than attenuated by the problems of being a child trying to raise a child. You don't want to know what shame and horrow they had to go through.

You can make up these fake "scenarios", but they are dexactly that, fake ... and are slanted to make them sound like your chosen conclusion is nice and sweet. Actual reality isn't so clean and simple; it tends to be grimy and smells.

Greetings Cottonjim:

The Munchkin Man would like to thank you very much for sharing the scenarios you described and the stark contrasts with which they were handled between a bygone era and today.

Please allow the Munchkin Man to comment on a few of the ones you mentioned:
_________________________

Scenario: Jack pulls into school parking lot with rifle in gun rack.

1973 Vice Principal comes over, takes a look at Jack's rifle, goes to his car and gets his to show Jack.

2006 School goes into lockdown, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized
students and teachers.

THE MUNCHKIN MAN'S COMMENTS: The Munchkin Man's first teaching job was at a small town country high school from 1978 to 1980.

A lot of the boys drove to school in their own pick-up trucks with a rifle firmly mounted in the gun rack in the rear. Nobody ever gave it a thought.
___________________________

Scenario: Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.

1973 Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up best friends. Nobody goes to jail, nobody arrested, nobody expelled.

2006 Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it.

THE MUNCHKIN MAN'S COMMENTS: The scenario described in 1973 is exactly how it should still be handled today.

It's a darned shame that schools today will no let boys be boys, so they can grow up and become the type of man the Munchkin Man is proud to be today.
__________________________

Scenario: Jeffrey won't be still in class, disrupts other students.

1973 Jeffrey sent to office and given a good paddling by Principal. Sits still in class.

2006 Jeffrey given huge doses of Ritalin. Becomes a zombie. School gets extra money from state because Jeffrey has a disability.

THE MUNCHKIN MAN'S COMMENTS: The Munchkin Man was blessed to have begun his teaching career when paddling was still used. Unfortunately, the practice ended a few years later.

Of all of the disciplinary procedures the Munchkin Man has used and witnessed in his lifetime, none of them ever worked as well as a good paddling.

Paddling needs to become reinstated in every public school system in every state in America.

All public school teachers should be required to attend after-school inservice training sessions on how to paddle and how to paddle effectively.

Now there is a drug called Ritalin to treat the fake disorder of ADHD. If you think a child has ADHD, sit that child in front of a Play Station.

If that child is still glued to that Playstation 15 minutes later, then you can be sure that this child does not have ADHD.
_______________________________

Scenario: Mark gets a headache and takes some headache medicine to school.

1973 Mark shares headache medicine with Principal out on the smoking dock.

2006 Police called, Mark expelled from school for drug violations. Car searched for drugs and weapons.

THE MUNCHKIN MAN'S COMMENTS: The Munchkin Man can clearly remember a bygone era when some of the principals would come outside and share a smoke with the students.

The students would bum from the principals. The principals would bum from the students.

The Munchkin Man no longer approves of smoking in school. However, it did used to result in some great camraderie between the students and their teachers and administrators.
_______________________________

These are the types of scenarios the Munchkin Man has experienced and/or witnessed during his long and honorable teaching career.

It's a crying shame that the golden days of such a bygone era are long and gone forever.

Very Sincerely,

Munchkin Man

Very interesting Munchkin Man. Actually ADHD has been proven in MANY cases to be brought on by many additives and preservatives in out foods. There are a number of parents who have gone through the time and trouble of illiminating certain food and food products from their children and came to receive some wonderful results and many children have been able to get off of ritalin and other meds. There is much to be learned on this subject and I hope many will invest in the time and trouble to get as much research as possible on this subject..

Munchkin Man, I agree there are some children (probably more than we know) that are labeled as ADHD that are just normal energetic kids. Most schools do not allow kids to have much opportunity at recess time to rid themselves of
their energy and thus tend to get in more trouble. A number of years ago, kids were allowed two recesses and had ample time to run and play like they needed to. Now, most schools only allow one recess and many times they are so pre-planned that it does does serve enough time to actually play. It is unfortunate that kids are so easily labeled ADHD and highly medicated these days. I worked at a middle school for awhile in the office and it shocked me that so many kids came in one after another to get their ritalin. Something is wrong with this picture.

It is done more often to please the school than to help the child.

Even one time, administering a drug to a child for something other than the child's welfare is too many.

Greetings Ruthie:

Thank you very much for bringing up a very interesting thought.

Even though the Munchkin Man doesn't recognize the existence of what he believes to be a trumped up disorder, the Munchkin Man also concedes the possibility that food can exert a powerful effect on behavior.

For years the Munchkin Man had to endure the effect of daily lunches of pizza, french fries, and Koolies upon the behavior of the students in his school.

There was a definite effect. It made them much more hyperactive. The Munchkin Man just doesn't like to call it ADHD.

The Munchkin Man still believes that sitting the overwhelming majority of these children down in front of a Play Station would have the effect of making the symptoms of what is called ADHD miracuoulsly disappear.

If these children truly had some type of pathological defect, which renders them incapable of sitting still and paying attention, the Munchkin Man believes that it would manifest itself in front of a Play Station.

The Munchkin Man also believes that the majority of these children are spoiled rotten and were never taught the manners and self-discipline at home to sit down and pay attention to their teachers.

Liberal educrats tend to subsidize this behavior by blaming the teachers and insisting that they need to start making all of their learning activities "fun."

The Munchkin Man does not agree with this philosophy. All learning should NOT have to be "fun."

Instead, a lot of what is learned in school should be the result of drill, more drill, practice, more practice, lots of memorization, and lots and lots of hard work.

The "fun" can come later.

What would the late great football coach, Vince Lombardi, have said if some of his players complained that his practice sessions were not "fun" enough? It would be unprintable.

Liberal educrats discourage teachers from using the "lecture" method of instruction. They claim this is "boring" to their students. They say that today's students are unable to "relate" to the lecture method of teaching.

This is all the more reason for teachers to use the lecture method of teaching and to use it as often as they can. It will help train the students' minds to focus upon what the teacher is saying.

For students who refuse to pay attention and disrupt the class instead, the Munchkin Man believes that the swift, sure, and certain punishment of a good paddling would be far more effective than a Ritalin.

In order to be effective, the consequence of paddling needs to be applied the first time the behavior occurs, the next time the behavior occurs, and the last time the behavior occurs. In other words, every single time.

Here's another phony disorder which has recently come down the pike. Its acronym is ODD. Can you guess what this stands for?

It stands for Oppositional Defiance Disorder.

This disorder claims that some children are pathologically unable to obey their parents and their teachers. They claim that it is a legitimate handicapping condition, and that children who have this "disorder" need to be treated with "kid gloves."

They claim that parents, teachers, and school administrators should "tiptoe" around these children.

Malarky.

Instead, these children, and all children for that matter, must be taught to "tiptoe" around their parents, teachers, and school administrators.

The Munchkin Man says that all they need are a couple of parents who've got a pair and a special paddle with their name on it at school.

So, the Munchkin Man hereby claims that there is no such thing as ODD.

But the Munchkin Man does believe that there is such a thing as SRP.

This is the Munchkin Man's acronym for "Spoiled Rotten Punk."

Now the Munchkin Man is starting to feel hyper.

The Munchkin Man thinks he will write a book.

Best Wishes,

Munchkin Man

Greetings Ruthie:

Thank you very much for sharing some additional and very legitimate thoughts and observations.

You have brought up an excellent point with the "recess" issue.

When the Munchkin Man was in junior high school, the Munchkin Man had an hour for lunch.

It didn't take the Munchkin Man a whole hour to eat his lunch.

It hardly took any of the students a whole hour to eat their lunch.

Instead, eating lunch took about 30 minutes at most for the vast majority of the students.

The other 30 minutes used to be spent going outside.

During these 30 minutes, the Munchkin Man used to join his friends in activities such as running around, chasing each other, wrestling all over the ground, and just having an overall good time.

By the time the bell rang to come back inside and go to the next class, the Munchkin Man was pooped.
The Munchkin Man had released all that pent up energy and was ready to settle down.

Most of today's students don't get this luxury. Instead, they are rushed through lunch periods that last for about 30 minutes and then rushed off to their next class with hardly enough time to use the bathroom.

This is directly after a lunch which consists of pizza, french fries, and Koolies. This was the "lunch of choice" among most of the students at the Munchkin Man's school.

If the Munchkin Man had his way, all students would have an hour off for lunch. A good half hour of this time would be made available to go outside to run around and play.

Kids need this type of thing.

Here's another think that used to irk the Munchkin Man to high heaven.

Sometimes a student would come into the Munchkin Man's classroom and tell the Munchkin Man that he would not be able to behave himself today because his Mama forgot to give him his Ritalin.

The Munchkin Man used to send such a student to the office so fast that his head would be spinning out the door.

Thanks again for sharing your very interesting observations and perspectives.

Good luck to you.

Best Wishes,

Munchkin Man

More likely:
Someone leaks the pregnancy to the media. They camp out on her lawn and chronically harrass her. The pro-choice and pro-lifers demonstrate and protest in front of her house. A clinic will get set on fire, a doctor will be shot. A few males will claim rights to the fetus and take the issue all the way to the US Supreme Court. Our POS president will intercede and issue a restraining order.

The girls dies. Either by suicide or botched self inflicted barbaric abortion attempt.

Read the latest news bullitins. They just arrested a man today for planting a bomb at a clinic in Austin yesterday. (The found and disarmed it before it went off.)

Not your entire and exact scenario, but way too close for comfort.

Not all terrorist are turban wearing Arabs with dirty beards, some are clean shaven devout Christians wearing baseball caps and $200 a pair Nikis.

Sad, interesting, but obviously predictable if I can create that scenario.

I don't live in Austin or Texas for that matter but this kind of stuff happens all over the US.

Isn't the first bomb at a clinic and several doctors and clinic workers have been shot.

"Not all terrorist are turban wearing Arabs with dirty beards, some are clean shaven devout Christians wearing baseball caps and $200 a pair Nikis."

Without a doubt, totally agree. We've had devout religious terrorism in this country since forever and, with our current administration co-signing, its run frighteningly rampant with no end in sight. Just seems to be gaining speed.

sad thing is...a lot of the 2006 things are programs that are liberal based..such as planned parenthood scenario up above, and people freaking out over a gun.

liberal judges letting child predators free in the northeast is common too....sad.

When talking about kids and drugs like ritalin and how quickly it is given these days, it makes me rather sick. These are kids and most simply are acting like kids and mature at different rate with vastly different attention spans.

Up until about 15-16 their bodies and minds are changing in so many different ways. Then you compound this with all the things that go on at home these days. Yet children are expected to sit in class and pay attention all day.

Sometimes i think too many, teachers, administrators and parents think kids are supposed to be adults, wrong. I personally would not want these kids to be anything but kids and enjoy the simple, yet complex life of being a kid. During the years between kindergarten and middle school, we need our teachers to understand kids are kids. Teachers should try to help children discover new interests and channel their energy towards further discovery. It is just far to easy to put kids on drugs for all involved (teachers, parents, psychologists, drug companies) and yet never really solve anything. This just helps others who have to deal with them in many cases. Many of these kids are as normal as any other--but their attention is focused in a little different direction at a particular time in life. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe instead of giving kids these drugs we should give it to the teachers and parents to help them tolarate these kids a little more. I know...there are cases when drugs might be appropriate. But the drugs are definitely overused.

again? i feel compelled to point out that this not a clearcut "liberal" versus "conservative" problem...

the conservative posers like to point fingers, but:

Ronald Reagan literally dismantled our govt run mental health "prisons"...

it most certainly was not the liberals who turned those poor souls onto the streets...

we NEED insane asylums for the mentally insane...

and they need to be separate from the criminally incarcerated...

i saw some of the inmates that were released from St Elizabeths in Wash DC. they moved to teh McDonalds parking lot across the street and literally lived in the parking lot there fo ryears after they were "set free" sheesh...

as a gun owner? i don't want my rights infringed upon, but i also don't want to have to shoot some freak in my doorway that is breaking into my house to steal whatever they have to to get thru the next 24 hours... i will, but i don't want to...

"we NEED insane asylums for the mentally insane...

BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!

But I don't want to get into a rant about that, because I do it daily. Working in a hospital's crisis stabilization unit for the severely and persistantly mentally ill I can say with knowledge and conviction that WE NEED THOSE INSTITUTIONS BACK. The current system is beyond sucking, inadequate, and disgustingly deficient.

Actually, having also worked in maximum security prisons and jails, I will add that's it inhumane the way we incarcerate the mentally ill. But there certainly are seriously dangerous mentally ill criminals that need to be in prison, albeit in units separated from the general prison populations.
