What happens if Saddam Hussein is acquitted? McAvoy Layne Special to the Bonanza October 13, 2006
Iraqi law makes me nervous. Charles Dickens told us in Oliver Twist, "The law is a ass." Well, what if the Iraqi court finds Saddam Hussein innocent of crimes against humanity? We won't find out until the end of this month, but whether he's found guilty or innocent, only two things can happen, and they're both bad.
One, if Saddam is found guilty and given a death sentence there will be hell to pay in the streets of Tikrit. Two, if he's found innocent, then our excuse for occupying Iraq after finding no weapons of mass destruction goes up in smoke.
When Saddam was uncovered and pulled out of that coyote hole we assumed he would be given a speedy trial of his peers (quit laughing) and be summarily executed. But no, Saddam starts bossing the judge around and making grandiose speeches to the world while using his trial as a sounding board. He goes on a hunger strike, claims he would rather be shot than hanged, bully-rags a second judge after the first one gives up the ghost, and demands his mike not be turned off during his testimony. In short, he runs the show, and is the show.
If he were half a man, he would at least admit to putting two dozen look-alikes out of work upon his capture. I remember a story that was circulated while Saddam was still at large. The look-alikes were called to Baath headquarters and congratulated on their success in throwing Americans off the scent. Then they were told the sobering news that Saddam had been wounded in the last rocket attack, and had lost his left arm. They said several Saddam Hussein's ran for the exits.
On a sobering note, Saddam is accused of being responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of his own countrymen. Since we arrived on the scene in 2003 to liberate those people, 600,000 Iraqis have died from violence and we are quickly approaching 3,000 Americans dead, though we have yet to see a Liberation Day on the Iraqi calendar.
Let's talk about the jury for a minute. Are there any Kurds on the jury? (I would not like to be a Kurd. I think it would be better if they were to call themselves Kurdistanis or Kurdistans or something other than Kurds.)
Are there Sunnis on the jury, Shias, Baaths? Any minor tinkering could swing the verdict one way or the other. Is the trial rigged? I'd rather bet on a cock fight in the Philippines than the outcome of that trial. Still, I'm going to go on record as saying Saddam will be convicted, but not sentenced to death.
Cut this column out, and if I'm wrong you can bring it down to my lifeguard tower at Dig Me Beach any day of the week and I will serve you up a cup of Ovaltine at no charge. On the other hand, if I am right in my prediction, well, it will be the first time, so I shall pour myself an Ovaltine.
Oh, that reminds me, the questions I posed regarding the SNC partnership have been answered, and by a solid gold source. Milken is the savior of the college. He is not buying the college. As to the argument that his money is tainted I defer to Mark Twain: "You're right, it's twice tainted, taint yours, taint mine."
