how does it effect your life? I've only had it for a few months and it's runing it for me =(. i try to avoid noise because it stimulates it to get worse for moments. I hate when people talk loud around me....i listen to music/tv real low now. I have fears of what it will be like in 1-2 even 5 years from now. i get depressed whenever i stop to listen to it....i'm one who enjoys hius silence, and this just sucks

Maskers just produce noise to drown out the ringing...hardly any help imo because for that i could just turn on a radio or tv!

I've had it for years, from running sound for loud-azz rock bands...

you get used to it...the frequency it "took out" for me is that of the old, standard telephone ring... couldn't hear it ring if it was in the next room. SOmetimes? it *can* be maddening...when it's bad? Just do something that requires intense mental focus or sustained physical exertion.

Suposedly, some herbs/vitamins/minerals help...zinc comes to mind. There's more treatments nowadays than there were when it hity me.

Good luck...

OK,
leeme see if i can 'splain this in my own words...

there are different qualities of sounds...

my "take" is that there MAY POSSIBLY be a sort of a noise cancelling effect if you can find the correct sound...
noise cancelling is caused by making a sound that is "inverse" to the what you are experiencing...

heck with my 'splantion....

here's a picture...

 -

dang that's not clear either...

destructive interference sound is what you are looking for.. two sounds can cancel each other out..
you aren't hearing a real sound, but your ear is still generating a signal, so? you MAY be able to find a sound that will cancel out the signal...
look up sound cancelling headphones for a clearer 'splanation (maybe)

most people can't "keep their mind off" something--understand? the focus, the directive, to NOT think about it? usually makes it worse...

iow? *DO* get absorbed in something else... not *don't* think about it...

fluctuations? defintely--lol, the worst for me is when it sounds like a Salt Lake City-sized gospel choir of crickets...in the dead of winter. In summer? not so bad, cuz there's really crickets...

Also, think Glass is onto something: think about waveforms...opposing waves *do* cancel.

I understand that the condition isn't a laughing matter, yet I keep recalling Red Skeltons prize fighter, bagging on the side of his head and demanding someone answer the door.

The world lost a genious when he died.

I never paid much attention to the ringing in my ears till i read this post, now it's really bothering me. Is this like watching the commercials for prescription drugs on tv and hearing all the side effects then feeling bad. Now i need to put cotton in my ears to stop the ringing.

I never had ringing in my ears until 1998. I got in a horible accident, I tried to knock down a tree with a ATV, the tree won. One month plus in the hospital, the loss of sight in one eye, as well as the loss of hearing in one ear later. I have a constant ringing in my right ear, by constant I mean it never ends, so much I don't even notice it anymore until this thread made me think about it. How the F am I supposed to get to sleep now? Anywho, the doctors tell me that the ringing that I hear is because of some nerve damage, and it is that ear translating the particular sound vibrations (that's all sounds are) into what my brain calls sounds. The louder it is, the louder my ears ring. Sucks for a guitar player, I love it loud. If ringing rock ever comes into fashion I have a #1 hit.
