Pretty disgusting this oil business situation just ticks me off, this companies have enormous profits at the expense of middle class and lower americans. You go down to fill up a car and its $40 dollars and above we are seeing 3.00+ a gallon now. When they speak to these oil companies they always say we have all these added costs, but they are having record profits after deducting everything, they use every reason in the world to raise the price of gas. I don't see how young families that use their cars frequently can afford these kind of prices.

oil companies dont dictate the price of oil. its traded on the open market and prices are set by buying and selling.
If anything is to be angry about its that the government stirs up the chit in oil producing countries and drives up worry about supply demand issues that make speculators drive up prices.

Have you noticed that iran is all over the news for their nuclear progam that is at least 7-10 years away from a nuclear weapon but north korea HAS them and they rarely make news anymore?.
Whats the best way to drive up prices...? create uncertainty about future supply, and do you think exxon is goin to step in and say,"you guys can relax we have plenty of oil"? nope, instead they will check the crude price on the NYSE in the morning then get back to thumbing through the Bently catalog.

the oil co's do have a lot of influence TK. there just aren't enough of 'em anymore...

oil prices were also manipulated by Putin...remeber when he shut down Yukos? oil ran up fast.....

the real problem has been that every spike from fear has never been completely retraced...

the last several years events were set up when the major oil companies "restated" their reserves back in '03 and '04....

seems to me that the terrrists have been very profitable for the oil co's [Roll Eyes]

These oil companies have gotten way out of hand, yes our government is partly to blame they should be taxing them so heavily and giving them a break is they put a lot of this money back to the people in the US who are gettin killed by high prices. This is an energy source and at this point is a necessity to our economy but does not have any true regulation on its price. And i am talking about the US. oil companies, they are getting rich at the expense of lot of people that cannot afford it, with the help of our gov.

Glassman, you are right it seems that every crisis is favorable to the big oil companies even the ones that don't end up being a crisis.

well NR, i dunno why you would call it a class situation?

the fact is simple: corporate tax burdens in America have steadily decreased for decades...

Posted 4/11/2004 10:18 PM Updated 4/11/2004 10:32 PM

Although Buffett is widely admired for business acumen, his perspective on corporate taxes isn't shared in many corner offices nationwide. In fact, the percentage of federal tax receipts from corporate income taxes has been in decline since the 1950s, from over 30% to under 10%. And the General Accounting Office reported last week that 61% of U.S. corporations paid no taxes during the booming period from 1996 through 2000.
The 2002 and 2003 tax cuts were billed largely as cuts for individuals. But they also slashed an estimated $175 billion in corporate taxes through 2005

Wachovia paid no income taxes in 2002, despite reported profits of $4.1 billion. A Wachovia spokeswoman says the company did nothing wrong and that the company paid more than $900 million in taxes in 2003.

It was actually a joke in response to IWISHIHAD's comment "Pretty disgusting this oil business situation just ticks me off, this companies have enormous profits at the expense of middle class and lower americans."

oh, i guess my sense of humor left me at my last fillup [Big Grin]

i don't mind seeing people get filthy rich, what's bothering me is that oil is following gasoline prices up and not vice versa.... the oil sellers seem to be looking at the pump prices and saying, well, if they can get that much for gasoline? we can get more for the oil....

well stated

first it was production, er, the storm, then, maybe not, then, uhhh, fear.

I may have missed an iteration or two...

anyway, nice summation

it surely looks like price fixing...
what do i know tho, maybe they are able to anticipate the oil prices well enough to make sure we pay today what they are gonna pay tomorrow?

Glassman, you know there is no price fixing or monopolies in the oil business.
