""Clearly it's escalation, and also an attempt by Iran to flex its muscles as it goes into a new phase of the diplomatic struggle with the U.N. Security Council""

Now is the perfect time for Iran to really start instigating the U.S., Israel, and the U.N. security council.
We're probably the only nation that would send troops into that God forsaken land and the Iranians know our military is completely stretched... both financially and with man-power. The Iranians also know that with the current disaster happening in Iraq, Bush would be hard pressed to get a resolution to invade. And their would be virtually no support from the American populus.
The U.N. will just slap them on the wrist. Israel may makes some ballsy threats, but probably wouldn't strike.
Iran is playing their hand wisely. The timing to brazenly show their might and intentions is ripe.

Here's an expert from a new story I just read:
"Iran ready for any invasion"
TEHRAN, Iran - A top Iranian military official said Tuesday the country can now defend itself against any invasion originating from outside the region — a clear reference to the United States — as it tested a second new radar-avoiding missile.
The new surface-to-sea missile is equipped with remote-control and searching systems, state-run television reported. It said the new missile, called Kowsar after the name of a river in paradise, was a medium-range weapon that Iran had the capability to mass-produce.
It also asserted that the Kowsar's guidance system could not be scrambled, and it had been designed to sink ships.
Shortly after the test, the chief of the elite Revolutionary Guards, Gen. Yahya Rahim Safavi, warned that Iran was now able to "confront any extra-regional invasion," referring to the United States without mentioning it by name.

What are the odds that this rocket is a sham or just hot air? Remember, Iran and Iraq operate in quite similar ways....they may be lying. Even if they aren't lying, what are the odds they don't know what they are talking about?

I'm sure Iran is hyping things a bit and reporting with a touch of brevado. I'll believe their claims, though. They seem to have the cash to buy the technology and they seem to have military trading partners in China and Russia. And they have pretty clear motives to strengthen their military and weapons program.

But didn't Saddam actually tell the truth and say he possesed no weapons of mass destruction? And Iran is much further along in their nucleur program than Saddam could have ever even dreamed of.
It appears Iran's weapons program is lightyears ahead of Iraq's. I think Iran is a real and viable threat.
