Texas busting drunks ... in bars

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) -- Texas has begun sending undercover agents into bars to arrest drinkers for being drunk, a spokeswoman for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission said Wednesday.

The first sting operation was conducted recently in a Dallas suburb where agents infiltrated 36 bars and arrested 30 people for public intoxication, said the commission's Carolyn Beck.

Being in a bar does not exempt one from the state laws against public drunkenness, Beck said.

The goal, she said, was to detain drunks before they leave a bar and go do something dangerous like drive a car.

"We feel that the only way we're going to get at the drunk driving problem and the problem of people hurting each other while drunk is by crackdowns like this," she said.

"There are a lot of dangerous and stupid things people do when they're intoxicated, other than get behind the wheel of a car," Beck said. "People walk out into traffic and get run over, people jump off of balconies trying to reach a swimming pool and miss."

She said the sting operations would continue throughout the state.

Sad to say this is not going to happen just in Texas. We are already living in police states and under the rule of dictatorship. We are in the process of what I call the criminalization of america. This is only the start of what is happening in anerica. This is on the state level wait till the local goverment start creating laws that you can be arrested for. Sorry to say we are all in trouble in this country.

Frankly, I didn't know that Texas had a statute making public drunkenness or intoxication illegal.

The whole atmosphere we are living in under the Republican notion that more laws to make it easier to arrest and punish someone make us more safer and Christian and that is good is sick.

Amanick says, "We are already living in police states and under the rule of dictatorship." There is a lot of truth to that and until we begin to vote at the ballot box to clean out the vermin that sell political favors when we aren't looking and hollering "the 1st amendment is against God" when we are looking, then passing "crime prevention" laws to keep us from noticing they are ignoring the Bill of Rights all of the time, we will only sink deeper under control of those whose actions we are supposed to control.

The horrible thing is, we have allowed it to go on so long that there probably aren't 45% of the Congressional districts that have escaped the jerrymandering so obtuse that anything other than a Republican Party loyalist that spouts Party line rhetoric almost identical to the Nazi doctrines of Germany in the 30s and it may well never be possible to elect a Congress that places the health and welfare of the Nation before the Party again. (We have districts that often are no more than a dozen miles wide and may be 3 to 4 hundred miles long, in order to reach into and capture capture republican neighborhoods to dilute the votes of the poor in cities not even in the same climate zone.) Now, for those of you that are jumping up and down and wanting to excuse the Republican Party by yelling that the Democrats do the sane thing....that too is Party Line BS to keep the public from noticing that the problem is NOW and NOW it is the Republican demand of party over country that is destroying our Constitution.

Another thought too. It is going on in Dallas. In Texas, Dallas is often described as the only damnyankee town in Texas.

I do not think this will go on to long they will have to police any establishment that serves alcohol if you single out a particlar establishment it will be challanged, if you police all establishments that serve alcohol people will stop going and profits will drop for these businesses in all areas, the courts will have a great time and so will the police departments good luck.

So what is the criteria for public intoxication in Texas? One drink? Two? Three? Who makes that determination? The officer?(that would be waaayyy to subjective IMO) Would they use a breathe analyzer? But would the PI limit be the same as DUI limit if you are not driving? Wouldn't anybody in a bar, who is consuming alcohol, technically be publically intoxicated? Alcohol is an intoxicant, and you are in a bar which is a public domain. What standards would be applied?

Whats next?
Sneeze or cough in public and be arrested as a public nuisance?
Heckle or boo an opposing player or team at a pro sports event and be arrested for inciting a riot?
Tell someone to f*ckoff and be arrested for sexual harrassment?
Voice you opinion in public and be arrested for disturbing the peace?

And so it begins....

one night I woke up while a buddy of mine was getting run through the "walk-this-line, touch-your-nose test." Another police oddifer sorta motioned for me to get out of the car...then ignored me once I did. I took the opportunity to duck into the nearest alley and take a whiz...

That was considered Public Intoxication.

Boy, were they right...

The bar thing won't last long--first hot-shot attorney that gets busted will force the cops to also go into bars they don't wannna go.

it gets better:

apparently some were arrested in the hotel bars where they were spending the night [Roll Eyes]

i don't even drink and i can't believe this...

the thought police are getting too full of themselves....

we don't even have a bar/tavern in this small University Town of 15,000 here in MS...
[Confused]

yeah it's LEGAL to have one, but the church groups get them shut them down by hassling the bar owners and patrons so much they just give up...

Can't say I agree with this completely...but to look at it from the cop's side (I am one btw). We are catching all kinds of heat from Politico's (Dems and GOP) as a result of MADD to do something. You can bet this wasn't a police dept originated Idea, but someone sitting in an office yes sir or yes ma'am ing somebody. They then get on the horn to Chief of Police and "suggest" that this would be a good idea. I promise you we catch enuff grief on the street, without doin stupid stuff just because a local pol thinks it's a good idea. My recommendation is that ya'll join DAMM (drunks against mad mothers) lol

i din't mean to imply i thought the "thought police" are the cops...

i have a lot of respect for cops that do their job well. and just like the military? they have to follow orders...

the "thought police" i was referring to are the Politico's (Dems and GOP) as you put it..
and Hillary is one of them too as far as i'm concerned...

I am not a cop and I wonder how they get there job done at all. Then we throw them all of Americas mistakes and outcasts and tell them it is there problem and to keep order. Sounds to me like some real trouble will come of all this.

The sickness in it all is that those pols that are sending "down" orders (for the cops or teachers or whomever else to obey) are yielding to the the idiot factions of society.

there is no doubt about it the idiots are in control and I hope this ends to a certain degree this Nov. of 06 But I am satrting to doubt the logic any more of the country's population. It seems they are looking for answers that are 1/2 truths and easy to understand and it going to get worse as the population gets a poorer education. Already with all the cuts in education the interest on the national debt is 3 times as much as the total fed budget for education what a mess it sounds like the kool aide drinkers don't care if there children can read or write.

You're exactly right, we are expected to deal with the members of society everyone else doesn't want to. Whenever we show up it's either we didn't get there soon enough, or "Why are you here instead of catching criminals". People forget law enforcement is primarily reactionary by law. I cant arrest somebody until they have actually commited a crime not before, and then of course it's my fault it was commited in the first place. Were expected to make snap decision at three in the morning 4 seconds after arriving on scene. Then everything we do is examinued under a microscope with benefit of clear light of day and three days to ponder what I should have done. Always by people that although they know more about what I do than me, wouldn't do my job for a million dollars. I'm a reerve officer and do it for nothing. Add to that the fact that the city feels we should be able to do the job with less than half of the manpower actually needed, thereby necessitating the use of unpaid reserve officers in the first place. Then wonder why cops get mad and do on occasion act overzealously. Anyway thanks for the support I'm off ny high horse for now

this is one of the basic fundaments of a free society...

we have no choice but to accept that some crimes will be committed...
people willing to "trade this in" for "more security" are fools and fascists....

yes, there are ways to prevent a lot of crime without impeding freedom and privacy, but lately i have become very concerned that too many people want "insurance" and don't realise what they are "giving away" in order to have a FACSIMILE of "insurance & safety"...

when you were born? nobody ever promised you life would be easy or safe... deal with it...and don't try to give away our freedom.

problem with criminalization in america is we are going to create a class of hopelessness and unemployment which will make people desparate to survive. I like to read om laws being created and one that really stands out was the creation of public registies. There are registries being created for everything you can imagine to publicly humilate people. I just hope that we dont go so far that people cant find a place to live or work because of their past. Imagine if they all got work from alqueda to support themselves? i belive we are going down the wrong path with these laws and will create our own terrorists right here at home.

I recently read an artilce I believe was out of ohio that if you are arrested for a dwi you are issued green license plates for your car so people know you are a drunk driver. They are also starting a public registry for drunk drivers.

I also think the state of virgina has or is strating a public registry for those convicted of drug posseion or use and also several states have a registry started for those who dont pay child support.

All of this is really rediculous , costs the taxpayers money and public humiliation for what purpose does this serve.

Now the goverment wants to be able to sell our Tax returns to those who want a copy of it. I hope this bill doesnt go through. Im not understanding why our tax returns should become public.

and city bus drivers...etc

tax returns? lol, mortgage info is public, including your monthly payment, I think...

I firmly believe that over 90% of the push to outlaw everything that has to do with alcohol is actually aimed at bringing back prohibition and is more a religious movement than a realistic position. Anyway, I've seen some of the raw data on drunk driving before the politically correctness freaks redid the conclusions to make it look way more dangerous than it is.

Now here's a thought I have had: Brazil is reaching independence from foreign oil sources by growing and distilling crops to make ethanol to power vehicles. How much would you bet that if there were an actual effort here to do the same, we'd get the anti-alcohol freaks out in organized opposition, claiming it is a "safety concern"?
