Just curious to know what you guys do for a living. Do the majority of the members here have office jobs and he/she can watch the market all day? Do some here ONLY play the market as income (I couldn't imagine how nerve racking that would be)? I am a landscape contractor so luckily I get outdoors alot. Sorry but I don't like sitting in office all day. I have quite a bit of office work though. Sorry for all the chit chat, lol. It was just a brain fart. GLTA.

Ex-insurance adjustor who went to work at a body shop as a direct repair program manager that got laid off when the owner found out I was getting deployed. Army's done with me now, civillian employer laughed when I asked about my job, and I am apparently the wrong demographic for a state job up here in Washington. Pretty much WASP males need not apply regardless of education, qualifications, or experience. Soooooooo.........I discovered that through the National Guard I can go back to school full time, get my MBA paid for 100%, and still take home three grand a month. It ain't much, and definitely not the money I was making before, but it pays the bills and I don't have to get a real job for two years now. woooo hoooo. Just got to get accepted into the University of Washington's MBA program.

Well, it's my own fault for not prsuing my disability claim with the VA. I was told that at 30%, demographics go out the window. I just feel bad doing it because I look at some of my buddies and would feel like a total puzz for doing it. So I don't, out of respect for them.

Highlander -In my opinion no puzz in filing a VA. claim. If it happenened during or was aggravated while serving in the military you are intitled to it. Of course you can file anytime. Just remember if you do file you are generally in for a long haul with the VA. I felt the same way when I got out.

Being an activated Reservist or National Guard member, your job is protected when you are activated. Not only should your employer have hired you back immediately, but you are entitled to any pay raises and benefit packages which would have occured if you had not been activated.
There may be some loopholes for your employer to squeeze through if it's a small company but it would be worth looking into.
He may have broken the law when he laid you off. IF you can prove he did it because you were being activated.

I know, but sometimes going after an employer fo re-employment rights can be dicey. In the insurance/body shop world, everyone knows everyone. It would be a quick way for me to get blackballed for causing problems. Everyone out there would know that I caused a problem for one of their peers and would be really leery of hiring me. In this case, my old boss is connected with everyone. His family goes waaaaay back and his name recognition is astounding. This guys gets pulled over in his Ferrari doing 130+ in a 35 mph zone and gets off with a warning. So, needless to say, I'll just suck it up, take this opportunity to move on and go back to school. But thanks Aragorn. Oh and IWISHIHAD, spoke with a guy with HR for the state, definitely gonna pursue my claim with the VA. My, story....got dumb, skylined myself, had a sniper almost get me and when I hit the deck I landed wrong on my shoulder and ripped the snot out of it. I was so hopped up at the time that I just wrote it off, it didn't REALLY start bothering me til about a month later when I had to twist around quickly during another engagement to pop a guy running up behind our truck with an RPG. But again....thanks guys.

That's great your going to pursue your claim, you deserve the extra income, you paid the price. I guess now the question is, do you pursue it on your own or use a veterans organization to represent you.

write a simple, concise letter to your congressman... UNLESS you are still active or reserve in any way...
as a civilian that old rule of don't write those letters to bigwigs changes....
also? different VA hospitals behave very differently....
Norkolk was sloooooowwwwwww but they came thru,
Loma Linda was a pain in th butt till i found the right person, and suddenly everybody was nice...
Lincoln NE? was the BEST.... they had only one real jerk that i unfortunately met my first visit there... i won't go into details, but i documented his a$$inine behaviour and he ended up getting "transferred" , but not just because of me...he treated everybody that way...

Hilander - I did mine on my own and glad I did. If you have a good represenative in one of these organizations that's good. It's a little easier to have a service organazation handle it, but you have less control. I talked to a few and was not comfortable with the answer's I got, so decided to do it on my own. I did some research on my issues before I talked to them. A good place to start research of do's and don'ts of your claim, is search US. Dept Of Veterans Affairs This will get you to there main web page then search Board Of Veterans Appeals then hit Searh Decisions put in your claim decription. This hopefully will help.

HIGHLANDER, Also check with your local county VA Rep....Sometimes you may get lucky and find someone there who has been thru the system and knows how to fast track...
Also, Seattle should have groups that are pro-advacate.

Hilander- I didn't mean to slow you any by posting this stuff. Actually to get your claim started all you need to do is write one or two sentences stating what you are filing your claim for, any of these groups can help or the VA. or do it yourself. The Veterans Administation has reps. at most VA. Hospitals they can help do that also. You will have plenty of time to decide after that, who handles your claim. It will take the VA. a long time before they start anything, they will send you a questionare usually a min. of 6 months before they start your claim. Hopefully its quicker in your area.
