Mike Brown needs to set the record straight. That the fault lies with governor Blanco and mayor Nagin. It is now reported that Nagin had actually 2000 buses at his disposal which he did not use. They had to bring in 800 buses from Houston because New Orlean buses were all UNDER water. Instead of staying to ensure his people were safely evacuated, Ray "BUS" Nagin fled to Baton Rogue along with 300 police and firefighters who eventually quit. Now that's public service for you.
And this Katherin Blanco (Ms El Blank-o) waited 24 hours (too long) to accepted Bush's offer for assistance and declined the Salvation Army's offer to begin handing out water, food and supplies to the people at the Superdome the following Tuesday after the storm.
the problem wasn't evacuation... it was NOT getting relief in RIGHT AWAY, as soon as the situation demanded it... no more no less...IMO...
you can't go 'round expecting to evacuate everybody all the time.... one of the se times? the storm will change course, and we'll have evacuated the wrong place... or there will be more people killed on the highway TRYING to evack... life is messy, you do what you can....
i haven't heard about ANY people "left behind" complaining about not being evacuated..have i missed something??? are there people who are complaining about not being evacked? the people that "hunkered down" know the drill as well as anybody...
all of this Mandatory Evacuation talk is beginning to border on another side of Martial Law...
if i want to stay in a high-risk zone? it's my right, i should be able to expect a reasonable rescue effort, or at least some food dropped.....(personally? i wouldn't stay without at least a case of Zingers, you know the raspberry and coconut ones? )
