Halliburton can now pocket even more of the federal cleanup money (ie. our taxes).
Why am I not surprised?
WASHINGTON: US President George W Bush issued an executive order on Thursday allowing federal contractors rebuilding in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to pay below the prevailing wage.

Art prevailing wage has nothing to do with minimun wage. Union workers have prevailing wages in michigan for construction workers it is 24 + dollars an hour plus overtime after 8.

To ensure that organized labor has a fair chance to bid for government contracts, federal law requires all employers engaged in the performance of federal contracts to pay "prevailing" wages to their workers. This ensures that nonunion employers cannot gain an unfair bidding advantage by paying wages far below the union rate and passing the savings on to the government in lower bids. A prevailing wage is a rate of pay determined by the U.S. Department of Labor to be the norm in a particular geographic area for a given class of labor and type of project. Virtually all federal expenditures in the private sector are covered by the prevailing wage provisions outlined in the Davis-Bacon Act, the McNamara-O'Hara Service Contract Act, and the Walsh-Healy Act.
This is a regulated Federal Law. not state

More workers will be needed to rebuild this 90,000 square mile disaster area then the Government can afford to pay at $34 per hour. Yes, Halliburtan is a contractor, but the Feds are putting up a lot of the cash. We the tax payer can better afford to hire the thousands of workers it will take to rebuild at $10 - $12 per hour then at $25+. What I am more concerned about is did Halliburtan get the contract through a fair bidding process.

You think the government will pay HALLIBURTON less as a result of these lower wages?
Ha! No way. Granted, less money will be transferred the laborers actually doing the work, but this is one case where those savings definitely won't be passed on to the customer.

Just from googling I've found news sources saying that Prevailing wages in Louisianna are anywhere from 9$ per hour to $25. Louisianna has no minimum wage law.

i also want to know if they are gonna be hiring illegal aliens ....
are they suspending the citizenship requirement too???
a lot of these workers will be people who already lost their jobs becsause of the disater....
sheesh..insult to injury....
i'm no fan of big labor, but American labor is being crushed on all sides...
sooner or later there will only be bosses, cuz nobody will be willing to do the work for what they will pay...
hmmmmm.... isn't that already what the defenders of the illegal immigration policies use as an excuse?? the illegals do jobs "nobody else" wants??? only thing is they forget to add the qualifier which in this case is "at these wages" no LOL...
