I was a 19 year old high school drop out private E-2 when I arrived in Viet Nam in April of 1971.
I was what many may consider a " Bad A$$ "
My memory is some what disabled due to injuries and the passage of time.
So don't expect alot of technical expertize from me.
However I am qualified to give you a snap shot of things I expeirianced.
In 1971-72 Racism was rampant in country {RVN} between Blacks and Whites..
The rear areas were the worst.
Heroin addiction was a huge problem in the rear area's.
The term juicers and pot heads was used all the time.
I saw and was involved in a race riot in Cam Rahn Bay in 1972.
So I do have first hand knowledge of racism.
I was in a Transportation outfit, but was detailed to many other duties while in Nam.
I was involved in 4 differant fire fights and I was not trained as a grunt [ 11 Bravo ] my original MOS was 64 charly [ Heavy Transportation ] it was then modified to light vehicle driver... The CO wanted me to to be a jeep driver because he thought because I was such an athlete, surfer and general all around street thug with fast driving abilities that he thought my fast reflexes would be better served driving a M151 for one of his NCO'S and Commissioned Officers in convoy.
We can go into racism involving Local Nationals if you want to latter.
My whole point and hopefully help to some is I've been there,I do understand racism and how it can eat you up from within..
I see a major racist up heaval coming out of Katrina and just hope people will get a grip before it really gets out of hand.
When these thousands of poor blacks are transported into middle America there is going to be trouble, plain and simple.

Dust..., you keep making good timely points all the time on these matters. I keep meaning to send you a personal communication and tell you how much those poor folks that have been trapped in this mess owe to you and others like you that have been sounding the alarm since before the storm hit. And I don't mean just the alarm that the storm was going to be terrible and the poor and sick needed us to help them. But time and a defective memory get in the way, so let my personal communication be partially done here.
These questions you raise about the racial and economic devide that gets wider every day are, indeed, being brought to the surface by the clear failure of our leaders to bother to care about a whole lot of people. There is fear and resentment that has been brewing a long time. We should be ashamed.
To answer directly the question you asked, no, I know of no example of anyone arming themselves. I have looked for any reliable evidence that some are and can't find any. Or, I should say that the only reports of that or of several other things I hear "reported" seem to have only rumor and dark suspicion (racism?) behind them. I'm told that some cop was "fired on" in New Orleans, but no cop or anyone else I have heard tell the story seems to have been there when it happened. So I just don't know. But even here in Fort Worth, safely at a distance from the horror of the storm, when you venture into certain "areas" you can feel the tention. There is resentment. it is not a pleasant feel.

Do you know for a fact if people are arming themselves in public display?
My uncle in Atlanta says gun sales are exploding everywhere.
My 92 yr old father in Vancouver Washington says old folks are getting scared.
I am signaling the 3 of ya cause yer there, and I know you from the boards.
i stopped to buy cigarrettes last night in one of MS black towns, i was the only white person in sight. i felt the normal tension, but nothing more. Of course my tattoos and my brand may have made them less likey to think of me as the "enemy"?
I ain't from 'round here, but i was in public school in 7th grade when they enforced bussing in my county in MD back in the early 70's.
Race issues can be overcome...
Here in this very poor area where i live? I go to the grocery store and more mature african americans generally won't look me in the eye. . They've been "trained" not to.It's almost as if i don't exist, because they are trapped. They are damned if they smile wrong, and damned if they possibly frown, get it? Those movies you see on TV about lynchings and what not back before 1970?? They happened HERE where i live. So, the good news? Younger african americans that i see in the grocery store will look me in the eye, and return my smiles....

We're at capacity, city officials say. Which I don't get. About 4,000, I think. Haven't read the paper today...but that was the projection. I don't understand how Austin can pony up for 5,000 and we can handle only 4,000. We're using a gym, basically, NOT the Convention Center or Will Rogers or the Cutting Horse facilities or any of the universities...
However, most of the stories coming out so far are encouraging. Motel folk getting "adopted" and peeps driving over with food, grills, clothes, etc with no "agency" middle-men.
Lots of collection centers popping up, ad hoc job banks, and so forth.
Logically, a problem looms as working stiffs strain to absorb fuel costs--if jobs are lost to evacuees via preferential treatment, that may get sticky...As you prolly remember, Dusty, it's nothing in "normal times" for guys here to drive 400-500 miles a week going to scattered job sites. Suddenly, fuel is a big, big problem. For instance, I drove to Lewisville twice last week, 85 miles roundtrip. Normally no big deal. But now I'm thinking--hey, gotta up my prices. And I drive a 4-cylinder Nisssan. Went to Burleson yesterday and today. Might drive that far to eat out--normally. That's only about, what Bdgee? 40 miles roundtrip? But in my bud's big Ford work-truck? yikes...
Racism itself *should not* be a problem, here. As I've posted several times, I live in the most ethnically diverse zip-code in the whole state. Integration started here when I was in grade school. Since then we've taken the Hispanic growth pretty much in stride, and also absorbed a large SE Asian population. In my neighborhood, Vietnamese and Mexican retuarants outnumber BB-Q and chicken-fried steak joints. It's very possible to trade at a store owned by a Pakistani, but get waited on by someone from Nairobi. On my at-risk teams, I coached Mexicans, Cubans, Tejanos, Salvadorans, Costa Ricans, Nigerians...my son's got language skills --even inducted into the Hispanic Nat'l Honor Society. That one kinda threw me...
Anyway, won't say it "can't happen here," but believe it less likely than, say, Dallas or Houston...

guess we're maxed out...Dallas, Ft Worth, Houston, Austin, San Antonio. Course, in perspective, both Memphis and Little Rock are closer to New Orleans than San Antonio...
I'm not convinced that large groups are the best way to go, either. Seems like towns along the way could take in groups of, say, 30 to 100...

As Tex says, a 60- 80 mile drive to work or whatever is common here. Way back in high school I can remember driving way way past and hour to pick up my date more and that was for more than one girl. And I'm not the only person that is cutting back on where I mu=ight go have dinner or what store and where I might choose to shop. The gas prices are hurting.
Also as Tex reports, racial and ethnic diversity isn't new to us. Austin may be more so, but not a lot. I'd like to tell you that all of Texas is reasonably relaxed on racial issues, but it just ain't so.

we've built our infrastructure and even our whole society on the idea of cheap gas. jumping in a car and going wherever whenever cheaply.. in europe where they built up before cars, and everything is organised so that driving every day is more or less optional? they can afford 5$ gallon gas... we can't.....
not without severe inflation...

no, we can't--as a bubble, maybe--but, if not corrected? We'll see throwaway appliances, like Bic lighters, cuz folks can't afford repairs. (new problem: landfills) Need a roof? new windows? Got an electrical short in the ol' basement? Happy to help--pay the fuel costs, plus traditional materials and labor. The fix-it-folk can not just eat this--especially with Oil Execs raking record bonuses...then you got your min-wage folk. When they can't make ends meet--which is now, if you got a job across town--hello welfare, food stamps, etc...
Can you say "spiral" as in "maelstrom"?
Heard Rush say this, and it's one time I agree with the round man: *ALL* taxes on gasoline should be repealed immediately...

MR. BROUSSARD: Sir, they were told like me, every single day, "The cavalry's coming," on a federal level, "The cavalry's coming, the cavalry's coming, the cavalry's coming." I have just begun to hear the hoofs of the cavalry. The cavalry's still not here yet, but I've begun to hear the hoofs, and we're almost a week out.
Let me give you just three quick examples. We had Wal-Mart deliver three trucks of water, trailer trucks of water. FEMA turned them back. They said we didn't need them. This was a week ago. FEMA--we had 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel on a Coast Guard vessel docked in my parish. The Coast Guard said, "Come get the fuel right away." When we got there with our trucks, they got a word. "FEMA says don't give you the fuel." Yesterday--yesterday--FEMA comes in and cuts all of our emergency communication lines. They cut them without notice. Our sheriff, Harry Lee, goes back in, he reconnects the line. He posts armed guards on our line and says, "No one is getting near these lines." Sheriff Harry Lee said that if America--American government would have responded like Wal-Mart has responded, we wouldn't be in this crisis.
But I want to thank Governor Blanco for all she's done and all her leadership. She sent in the National Guard. I just repaired a breach on my side of the 17th Street canal that the secretary didn't foresee, a 300-foot breach. I just completed it yesterday with convoys of National Guard and local parish workers and levee board people. It took us two and a half days working 24/7. I just closed it.

Over in Los Angeles, an infamous black leader of the American Islam is passing out leaflets on the streets of Los Angeles, calling for a Jihad against the L.A. Police Department and is verbally calling for a Jihad against "white people."
Isn't that promoting terrorism?
He will not be arrested, ever, despite our leaders claiming zero tolerance for terrorist activities.

I should add, this leader of the American Islamic, last week, compared himself to Jesus and claims hurricane Katrina is God's venge against whites.
If so, why did God elect to punish a majority black population for crimes of white racists?
Bad enough the Germans are claiming Katrina is America's fault because of global warming. Now an Islamic leader claims Katrina is God's Hand striking the white.
There is a hidden message in that, in all of these events since Bush took office. Bush has put America in a position where the world hates us and many Americans even hate us. Bush has served to promote world wide poverty, despair, hatred and war.

May 6, 1999 | I like George Bush. He has a strong set of core convictions, including a significant religious faith, but he is also genuinely tolerant, open and warm-hearted toward people with whom he disagrees.
He has made, for example, the strongest statements of any Republican candidate about including homosexuals in the American family, and treating them with Christian charity and civic respect. "I was taught," he said in response to Trent Lott's infamous remarks, "that we should look after the beam in our own eye before searching for the mote in someone else's."
