I have an HP Pavilion. It survived 3 weeks in Kuwait, a rainstorm (was shut off, but sitting in an inch of water), sandstorm, and a year in Iraq. The thing works great and I am very happy with it.

What type of work/play will you be doing with it?
Unsure, I will be working at an embassy so I am not sure, I know I will be typing a lot of word docs and such. Put some pictures on it. Internet stuff.

If you want a pretty fast machine, that can do pretty much everything except medium-heavy visuals(like gaming) and a have a better than average battery life then this is a good choice. Acer Turion 1.6GHz 512mb Ram $975 The Turion 64 is AMD's new 64 bit mobile processor. It is mobile because it has a "speedstepping" technology that allows the processor to step it's clock cycles down when it doesn't need the extra power (the difference between running a game and running at word doc - a game will use every bit of power the processor can cycle, a word doc will use a very minimal amount) This technology allows for the battery life to far exceed that of of a laptop using a standard desktop processor.
If you want a very powerful machine, and one that will be okay for "medium-heavy" visuals plus give you enough pepness to get in and out of applications very quickly this is a stellar machine(however with more power comes less battery life) HP AMD64 3500 512mb $1,130 The AMD 64 3500+ is a powerhouse of power. It is what i am running on my current machine(see profile) It's AMD's 64bit desktop processor that is equivlent to an intel 3.55GHz in most applications. Very powerful. The graphic card on this laptop is much more effiecient than that of the one on the Turion laptop.
If you want a pretty quick machine that well be better than average on battery of life, get everything you need to do done + be able to play most games out today: Toshiba PentiumM1.6Ghz 512mb $1,175 The Pentium M 1.6Ghz is an Intel mobile processor built using their latest .90nano meter technology(the prescott core) This processor also has a "speedstepping" technology which will allow it to preserve battery life. Intel Pentium M is still a 32bit processor however. When 64 bit application do become available they will not be able to run on this machine.(and Windows 64bit has already been released) With the next release "Windows LongHorn" being completely 64bit just a fews years away you may want to consider a AMD 64bit laptop) There will be no real advantage of 64bit to a standard user though. This laptop has the most powerful graphics processor of the three, almost any game will be able to be ran with acceptable frame rates. (Keep in mind gaming is the most strenuious thing you can do on a laptop.)
I used to be a Electronic Components Salesman at Fry's Electronics. I spent 2 years explaining to people everything you could possible know about the differences between the newer technologies. I feel that they will all fit your need, and would advise going with the AMD 3500+ and get an extra battery. Or getting an extra battery later after you know how long it will last.
