Money that could have gone into raising teacher salaries went into tax cuts for the rich.
The high school dropout rates in Texas are 30% overall
The high school dropout rate in Texas is 50% among minorities
Missing students and other mirages in Texas enrollment statistics profoundly affected both reported dropout statistics and test scores.
At the start of every school year, school begins with literally hundreds of classrooms without teachers
Governor Bush appointed a teacher certification board that, instead of working on improving the standards for the teaching profession and improving teacher quality, he decided instead to allow people who have poor credentials to enter into the teaching profession
One in five Texas high school teachers are not certified
About 41,000 of 63,000 vacancies in Texas public schools were unfilled in 1999
Since about 1982, the rates at which Black and Hispanic students are required to repeat grade 9 have climbed steadily, such that by the late 1990s, nearly 30% of Black and Hispanic students were "failing" grade 9.
Texas charter schools were even poorer than public schools. Even though the racial mix was skewed to non-white, and the number of schools (66) is small, the economically disadvantaged rate was very similar, the percent of special ed students was less in the charter schools, and the test scores were uniformly substantially lower.
On national tests (NAEP), with one exception (4th grade math), Texas scores have remained flat over the period Bush was governor
After Bush took office, Texasís own state test TASP (a college readiness test) results showed a sharp decrease (from 65.2% to 43.3%) in the percentage of students passing all three parts (reading, math, and writing).
Performance on the SAT in Texas did not improved since the early 1990s, (compared with SAT takers nationally)

47th in delivery of social services
5th in percentage of people living in poverty

Full of lies. Public school systems everywhere are overfunded - overbloated administrative staff and teacher unions that allow teachers to do little and not provide quality education.
Some private schools produce much better results at less than half the budget of public schools.
Texas has a problem with trying to teach illegal immigrants that can't read or write in English and opt to drop out of school.
This statement of yours is a lie as can be seen by the link you provided in another thread: "On national tests (NAEP), with one exception (4th grade math), Texas scores have remained flat over the period Bush was governor". The truth is that NAEP scores show improvement under Bush, which is totalally inconsistent with your blather about how Bush has destroyed the school system.
Here is a graphic representation from the site you quoted from
Bush is not rewarding the past waste and incompetency of the school system, forcing the system to shape up. No one in the school system likes this as it means they have to eliminate useless administrative staff and that teachers have to go to work and teach.

these privates schools have WORSE records than the public school that i have chosen to put my kids in....

You are well educated. You must be one of those stupid Democrats.
Gotta love the Republican philosophy.
Makes me laugh, because Republicans out there don't get it. Their own party is clearly making a statement, "Republicans are not as educated as Democrats." I would think Republicans would be lighting torches and forming a lynch mob.

I'm getting tired of serving as your librarian. Unlike others on this forum, when I make a statement it is based on fact. I don't have an agenda other than the truth. Others make up facts to fit their personal needs, such as to hate Bush. I do not do this and my memory rarely fails me.
I remember an example about 2 years ago, on a cable news station, where academic achievement scores in a private school were much higher than in a nearby public school, even though the costs spent in the public school on each student was nearly 3 times more than that spent on the public school student.
Democrats, and even some Republicans, have thrown money at the problem of education for years. Bush is the first to try to make schools accountable for their performance, and people like Purl Gurl are saving whales and fighting Bush's reform of education while our school children grow up poorly prepared to get higher education or even to make a living.

these stats y'all been shuttlecocking? Thas why I created the youth program for inner-city, at-risk kids. Made a huge difference. Gang recruitment suffered while we took poor kids and taught rich kids how to play soccer. Changed the power structure in my town re that sport. What's funny? My biggest backers were three Anglo businessmen who could see the value of intercepting gang PR and converting ready recruits into atheletes who stayed in school. The minority business attitude was, "Hey, we made it on our own--so can they."
weird....
Anyways, the song remains the same: quit bellyaching. Do *something* in your community. Do not wait for "the city council," the "next vote," "when we get funding," blah yada blah...yes, I am probably the winningest rec-soccer coach in a state that consistently produces All-Americans...
--but--that was merely the carrot to introduce topics such as grades, accountability, setting goals, etc.
really. the way to "beat city hall"? don't play that game...
just take steps to repair your neighborhood. by the time city hall is interested, they can't say no without looking like fools...
*ahhh, much better--my rant for the day*

Our city of Riverside, and county, recently was named, by a national survey, to be the fastest growing municipal economy in the nation.
Our local government fairly much ignores state and federal guidelines and mandates. We are very rogue, according to national standards. We offer great tax incentives to commerce, offer affordable land, sponsor thousands of local programs for our children, and offer just as many adult education programs for little cost. We also take good care of the poor, especially single mothers, and are building lots and lots of affordable housing for both the poor and elderly.
Riverside enjoys millions in budget surplus money, one of the lowest unemployment rates, low crime, a large greenbelt area, celebrations of both our heritage and ethic background. Parades plenty! Cinco de Mayo is major celebration here.
We also have one of highest percentages of college educated populaces due to emphasis on education, which, of course, means we are stupid democrats.
Family, neighborhood and community. Works well!
