"Perhaps even more than the Enron scandal, the Riggs scandal is a
deeply political scandal. No doubt, much of what went on at Riggs
remains to be uncovered. With the announced sale of Riggs to PNL,
which will be completed by early next year, the owners of the bank
are clearly attempting to contain the scandal’s fallout."

illegal wiretapping, and Medicare fraud...Recarey had faced a major obstacle

On October 18, 1993, Bruce A. Hiler, the SEC’s associate director for enforcement, wrote a letter to Bush’s lawyer stating that “the investigation has been terminated as to the conduct of Mr. Bush, and that, at this time, no enforcement action is contemplated with respect to him.”

And this action was in the Clinton administration.

That's right. Plenty of time for Clinton to be advised of this, and decide to vigorously pursue it to make Republicans look bad.

You better believe Clinton would have done this if he could have.

There was no 'there' there.

At a White House press conference on Jul 9, 2002

Regarding the Aloha sale, Bush said, "There was no malfeance [sic] at all. This was an honest difference of opinion over accounting procedures" and that "In the corporate world, things aren't exactly black and white when it comes to accounting procedures." He said Harken re-stated their earnings, adding "There was no ...attempt to hide anything."

If there was no attempt to hide anything, why did they do the Aloha deal in the first place? And why did a senior partner from Ernst and Young say this was a "very clear black and white" issue?

The one key question is this:

If the Aloha sale to Harken insiders which was seller financed and put on the books as an $8M profit is an "honest difference of opinion" then didn't you just open the floodgates saying that corporate "self dealing" to artificially inflate reported earnings is OK?

The key 5 questions are these:

* Was the SEC correct in requiring Harken to restate the 1989 sale of 80% of Aloha Petroleum (a subsidiary of Harken) to IMR (a partnership of Harken insiders) in 1989 that was largely financed by Harken (the buyers gave Harken a note)?
* Did you know about this deal? If not, then how is that possible since you were on the board and the audit committee?
* What was the purpose of that transaction if not to defraud investors and make the financials look good? Why did Harken's press release mention an $8M value of the deal, but yet not mention it was seller financed by Harken, that it was sold to insiders, and why didn't it even mention the entity name it was sold to? [Harken press release]
* Didn't you think the Aloha was a material fact that was not publicly disclosed until after you sold your stock? The SEC certainly thought it was material and not public since they required Harken to restate their earnings on Jan 23, 1991 and reverse $7.916M.
* Should we punish people corporate executives who engage in transactions that defraud investors such as this one?

No matter how he answers, Bush loses.

* If he believes the Harken Aloha sale was misleading, then Bush is saying he has personally engaged in the illicit behavior and should be punished.
* If he believes the Harken Aloha sale was proper, then what Enron did should not be punished either and we are left wondering if anything is punishable. He's apparently in this camp since he thought the Aloha sale was a gray area and that it could have gone either way.

The only ones harping on this are Bush haters who try to unjustifiably demean Bush, like yourself and Purl Gurl.

"...Hiler’s official letter went on to say that it
“must in no way be construed as indicating that the
party has been exonerated or that no action may
ultimately result from the staff’s investigation”
(Lardner and Romano, 1999:) It is instructive to
note that head of the SEC at the time of investigation
was a supporter of then-President Bush, as was the
SEC’s general counsel (who later acted as George W.
Bush’s private attorney)...."

i totally disagree that the Clinton admin would have done ANYTHING Art,

and i'll remind you AGAIN! i'm no liberal...

the Clinton's were working their own schemes that couldn't stand the light of day too...whitewater aside? there were some questinable futures trades that Hillary was involved in...trades that were absolutely PERFECTLY executed...too perfect....

we see this in data in scientific papers alot too...when statistical data presented shows NO deviation from standard norms? i start sniffing the air.. [Big Grin]

Bush did make a good "show" of trying to clean up the market Art....

BUT?

Dubya had ABSOLUTELY NO CHOICE given the obvious trash these people were dumping on the American investor looking for nothing more than a safe retirement...

ENRON? both the Bushes and the Clintons were partying with Ken Leigh

Man, when I first ran across that Hitler/Nazi connection to *both* grandfathers, I nearly fell outta my chair...wasn't gonna bring that up till I verified whether it is a nutcase or two behind it. Has this ever come up as a campaign issue?

If there was any 'there' there, the liberal media would be all over these issues instead of just the liberal paranoid fringe crowd (well represented on this forum).

The Bush family does have a long history of
being involved in anti-American activities.

Not a single Bush boy has a clean record,
from grandpa on down.

More generic, there are few politicians, regardless
of party, who have a clean record. However, the
Bush family record is particularly heinous.

LOL Art... i think you need to get your eyes checked...you been staring at the "light of truth" too long...

The Ford family as in FoMoCo was also close to the third reich....
there were many notables in the USA that were, and that is why we HAD to be attacked at Pearl to get drawn into WW2....
attacking Pearl was one of the bonehead moves of all time......
no, i think we could safely argue that it was THE stupidest strategic move ever made....

when the Japanese minister was brought cross-country by train to begin negotiating details of the surrender? he was absolutely convinced that the train was being driven AROUND the country instead of straight across because he couldn't even comprehend the true size of the US.....

history is made up of a series of facts...
the opinions drawn from those fact usually bear little resemblance to the "truth"

"There's no there, there"

The Tarpley link is above, check the sources...prove em wrong--I'm not invested in the Nazi connection. If there's a shred of truth in it, the media should've been all over it...should still get all over it...

Pearl Harbor? Ever heard Roosevelt had foreknowledge? That would be explained in this model...

Of course, then all we have to do is solve the grassy knoll, Sasquatch, Nessie, et al. The main thing is to plug the drain on the market money siphon of today...In one sense, it doesn't matter how we got here...how do we fix it?

Art: You need to look at the light of truth some, that is, if you could ever find it.

Yes, many USA businesses and banks were doing business with the Nazis. That is my point - if the Harriman (a democratic presidential hopeful) and Bush had done anything of a big deal like posters here are suggesting, the liberal press would have exposed it and continually hammered Bush over it, long ago. There has only been a rare reference to it - a minor footnote in history.

Big Deal!

And yes, some USA companies are doing business right now with Iran, while Iran funds and supports the terrorists killing our soldiers.

My intent is to prompt people to smarten up and
pay more attention to what is going on out in
the world.

Too many are content to be members of the mindless
lickspittle minions buying the American Dream
with maxed out credit cards.

Five days back, "Kira, would you mind holding our
rent check until Saturday? We don't have enough
money in our account."

"No problem. I do not mind being your credit card."

Our monthly average credit card bill, $350. Our
monthly mortgage payments, $0. We pay cash or
we don't buy.

Those renters have enough money to buy a new SUV,
enough money to buy new furniture, enough money
to buy junk food. They learned nothing from having
their credit cards revoked a couple of years back.

Bush: "Let's buy a Toyota SUV and not pay our rent!"
