I think he was talking about an invasion of US soil.
Citizens would have time to mobilize, and prepare to assist the USA military resistance.
No tanks, planes, heavy weapons, etc. owned by citizens, but arms available could hurt invaders - as Glassman said, one man with a Sniper rifle can do much against an occupying force.

Yeah, I don't think that would stop China or Russia though, they could easily wipe you off the face of the earth (and your government in turn could do the same to them) just by bombing you with ICBMs. "invasions" in the classical sense of the word don't really happen much anymore, at least not the kind of foreign invasions (i.e. imperial England) that America's gun laws were crafted against.

Art: Registration will disuade gun ownership?
Apenorm57: I disagree. If registration was FREE, and everyone could own as many guns as possible, but just had to register, the only ones left out would be the WACO nutcases who fear black helicoptors, and I don't want them having guns anyway.
Art: Anything the government does cost much more than a private company could do it for, and government service (actually rip off) is never ever free. Look at the mess in Canada - cost 1.4 billion and climbing just to get it started and costs are paid by citizens. Better to do checks on people who buy at the point of purchase, as we are doing. Janet Reno took the guns away at Waco, by killing women and children when all we needed to do was capture David Karesh on his morning jogs when he was alone and exposed.
Apenorm57: Everyone should have guns with registration. Any type of gun. And you should be able to kill any trespasser on your property with proper notification (aka, a sign that says "TRESPASSERS WILL BE SHOT ON SIGHT).
Art: Well, if registration was not a prelude to later confiscation, I would agree. Confiscation follows registration, historically (Germany, Britian, Australia, etc.).
Florida allows shooting a home intruder if you feel your life is being threatened, but is now changing it to being able to shoot any home intruder without any qualification.

kevin, now you are talking trash...
nuke war(at any level) makes no sense...we all die... the "mad rush" to Baghdad is in fact the only workable model for "shooting" war that leave sa future for humanity....

Art: True. That's why we are developing missile defenses. However, we are most worried about a non-nuclear attack from those Northern invaders who will flood down from the border when their economy fails. Here our guns will come in handy (LOL).

Art, they took the guns away at Waco because those nuts shot at US Marshalls, did they not? They should have just napalmed the site after that and called it even, like they did in Philadelphia in the late 70's. Just wipe out city blocks in my opinion.

I got into a nice verble confrontation with a 6 foot 8 300 pound black crack dealer (litterally, I'm not exagerating) today, I was scared out of my mind.
I'm *starting* to understand why yankees love their guns so much.

In fact, the only real threat to Canada's economy is that the American economy is doing so poorly....
"Art: A nuke attack makes sense to terrorists."
Agreed...
Your dollar is worth a little more than half of ours yet your economy is better? This is the very logic that induced my decision to leave Canada many years ago.

haha... little more than half of yours???? Have you been paying attention to the US dollar lately??? Its been dropping like a stone over the last 5 years, just like your economic strength.
Why are you using an american message board? Why dont you go and use a canadian one? I bet you do alot of american things and yet you are so antagonistic. I do not like when those that take from america also criticise this country.

I don't believe in speaking with people that mearly reflect back your own opinion, you'll learn nothing that way. The idea of being 'anti-american' itself is kind of a laughing point around the world actually, it keeps getting used by the US media as if America(ns) are victims of some conspiracy.
I do use Canadian message boards too... its just, why don't you use a Canadian message board? You might learn something. I've learned things using this one...
"I do not like when those that take from america also criticise this country. "
I've never "taken" anything from america, I might like some aspects of american culture (music, movies) but I purchase those from you. Its called trade. I'll criticize whatever the hell I damn well please, as should you, its what makes Canada great and what once upon a time made America great before doing so became 'anti-american'.

It is the constant put down, resentment that is puzzling to me. Yes, you can do as you damn please but to me you are a hypocrite. You put this country down every chance you get yet you use many of the products of american culture as do many in the world. I use what I like and appreciate those that contributed in giving it to me. But, do as you please. I only hope that there are more Canadians that are unlike you. I for one will only use what I admire and have a need. I dont use products of a lesser culture. And, that is what comes thru form you. So, be happy you are a canadian vs showing resentment towards america. Go and enjoy all the fruits canada gives you. Hope you do not get sick or you may want to use american medical system.

You didnt "give" me anything. I gave you money and in exchange you gave me products I liked. We do it with you too.
"I for one will only use what I admire and have a need."
Thats a load of crap.
"I dont use products of a lesser culture. And, that is what comes thru form you."
Hmmm... racism AND ignorance. You've bought stuff thats come from Canada, either directly or indirectly.
"Hope you do not get sick or you may want to use american medical system."
haha, why? So some millionaire doctor can get even richer off my suffering so he can prop up a social system where only his son can afford to become a rich doctor too? I'll get better health care in Canada, and I dont have to feel like a ******* like I would in America knowing that tens of millions (actually, I think its over a hundred million now) go without health care so some doctors can get even richer along with their pharmacuetical pals.

Yeah, I forget the exact number used during the election by the democrats, Kerry cited it a lot.
Canadian health care has issues... we have ridiculous wait times for non-medically neccessary surgeory. So if you break an arm, you could be waiting on pain killers for hours before they help you. But that said, critical injuries and surgeories do get done on time and EVERYONE gets them...

bravo.
this anti-american thing is so hideously stupid.. makes me cringe.. makes me want to shoot the ppl saying it right in the face..and then shoot myself in the face too, just to see what it feels like... maybe you're being anti-idiocy, and the idiot in question happens to be waving an amer. flag when you express your anti-idiocy sentiment, and so they call it anti-american. what is this america anyway?
what is your america?
is it the citizens, the military, the president, the geography? the constitution? strip malls? fast food? SUVs? hollywood action movies? sexy dumb blondes? sexy *smart* blondes (purrr...)?? shock and awe?
baseball?
this is MY america: free speech, buster keaton, mark twain, 3 years of taxes in two days, the cohen bros, little girl pitchers squinting under baseball hats on little league teams, martin luther king, tom waits, no health insurance, bluegrass, this american life, steinbeck, sittin on the dock of the bay, maya angelou, it's a wonderful life, katherine hepburn, 1/2 court 3-on-3 pickup inner city basketball, rap, the green rolling hills of west virginia, a harmonica in the woods, a sax on a streetcorner, skitching in the snow, mean teen-aged girls, hemmingway-type boys (quiet handsome and strong, who fish..), ridiculous televised trials, garrison keilor, marlon brando (drool), bougenvilla, to kill a mockingbird, the simpsons, huge trees down south, clam bakes in new england, (sniff) water skiing, that awesome speech senator byrd made about the war.. ...strangers with candy..
and not having enough time to do a list like this justice. .
