Math

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl
took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my
pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3
pennies, while looking at the screen on her register.

I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two
quarters, but she hailed the manager for help.

While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and
cried.

Why do I tell you this?

Please read more about the "history of teaching math":

it's JUST memorization...no big deal, we made a game of it..

he was not willing to let anybody(his teacher included) in school know he had done this....

Thats the funniest thing I've ever heard. The funnier thing is, the parents of elistist suburban "white america" want little billy to goto college and take up the same overpaid job they've got. But they need a justification for why little billy is better than those "darn brown kids". So thats why Ivy league schools have taken the focus away from performance in school and towards community service, volunteer activity and other things only white suburban kids have the time to do knowing that mommy and daddy have tuition all paid up for them.

Awesome point kevin. (I really enjoyed the emphasis on "america as white" and "Darned as brown") i really must rethink my life and the goals for my children and my students.

I am lost on a couple little tidbits though. I could swear there are "darn brown kids" in the ivy league schools?

Also, Volunteering and helping others isn't a bad thing to teach, is it?

Also, most ivy leaguers take out student loans. Therefore enablng them to struggle through that long 3 classes a day, 45 minutes each class, man college is tough.

Then some folks like glassman, pay in small bills.

Thank You Kevin for bringing this incitefullness to our small, lonely, portion of the world.

Thanks again,

keithsan

yes, student loans are a VERY important tool in making our country better....
employers are beginning to realise that offering payments on students loans are effective incnentives to hire the VERY best too...

Anytime keithsan...

"I could swear there are "darn brown kids" in the ivy league schools?"

Haha, ok, but relative to the population at large, how many 'brown kids' are there in ivy league schools?

And no, volunteering to help others isn't the worst thing to teach. But when your motivation for it is to exclude people who don't have the time to volunteer because they are too busy working part-time jobs and taking **** from spoiled brat customers that goto europe to "find themselves".

I acually find that a persons socio-econmomic status is more of an indicator than anything else including skin color.

I go to Europe for the beaches personally.

Glass, i guess the city doesn't need tax breaks... we inquire.

No, I totally agree with you that colours\etc shouldn't matter. My problem is that they often do when it comes to college accessibility. Thats all.
