What is with these mayors threatening to pull building permits for this place just because the owner said he believes marriage should be between a man and a woman?

This is bringing out the true colors of the left. This is a good business that so many people enjoy eating at. Now its facing boycotts because of ones personal belief.

The pink swastika arises. Those who demand tolerance to being different, cant be tolerant of anyone they dont agree with. Sickening.

Chick-fil-A has the same position on marriage Obama had all his life up until two months ago when he was pressured into making a public statement changing his view. Meanwhile, liberals try to smear mitt as a flip flopper. You see the hypocrisy AGAIN?

No business should ever face government pressure to shut them down just because the owner believes something. We are entering a new era of this I am afraid. Nobody was turned down or denied service for being gay, and they have gay employees.

Rahm Emanuel is a prime example of left wing Chicago politics...slimy, strong arming, and intolerant. Even the ACLU is opposed to this circus. I think this is going to help Chick-fil-A's business because its going to draw more support than harm, and I think there are many gays who are embarrassed by this because everyone should have a right to express themselves freely without having their business hurt or jobs denied.

So you are for the boycott too eh? Well glass, "tobacco" pipes, and strippers are a just a little bit different than a decent fast food place that families bring their soccer and baseball teams to.

When mayors are threatening to pull the building permits for an establishment like this...yeah, freedom of speech huh.

I don't really have any passion on this particular topic but if you look, you will find that the president said Chick-fil-A believes marriage should be between a man and a woman. Not Dan believes, Chick-fil-A believes.

He has a right to believe what he wants and American law is leaning more and more toward giving corporations the rights of an individual.

Considering the amount of money and clout corporations can now bring to political races it actually makes a lot of sense for these elected officials to be concerned about the politics of the corps who want to build up in their cities.

you know Big that IS a very good point. If persons are corporations then Two male coporation cannot merge. We need to ban that too- so who gets to be the one who decides which corporation are whihc sex? [Big Grin]

CHICK fil-a? female... wendys? female

Burger Queen? Nope it's male- Burger KIng... dairy Queen... sheesh, all that psuedo food....

Mcdonalds? ronald is male, so Chick fil-a can merge with MCdonalds, but not with Wendy's unless one of 'em gets a sex change, then it'll be OK [Big Grin]

here's the dastardly quote;

"I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say 'we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage' and I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about."

i have few questions.

Is every bit of food served at hik-fil-a Kosher?
If it isn't, they are shaking their fist at God too. Just because Christians chick and poose which parts of the Bible they want to follow and which are not for them doesn't mean it's OK with the CEO....

Another Question, If a gay couple handles a pit viper and it doesn't bite them, does that mean God forgave them for shaking their fist? And if it does mean that, does substituting the pit viper with a rubber snake that God can easily convert into a live one also count?

You should not be going to those places at all which you seem to not frequent. Anything that comes through a window is not food in my opinion. However, they sure know how to make it taste good with a lot of salt.

ROFL, that sounds a whole lot like justification for political discrimination, Big.

Don't get me wrong...I believe that the first amendment protects these people (on both sides) and their 'right' to share their opinions. The telling point to all of this is HOW each side chose to express their opinions.

"political discrimiantion"?

wahhhhhhh!!!! politics IS discrimiantion.

so is refusing to allow gay people to marry. i agree that it is a redeefintion of marriage, and would prefer to make allowances for "legal marriages" versus "religios marriages". think abou thtis tho, if a Church wants to perform gay marriages? then what right does Congress have to ban it? NONE read your Constitution carefully:

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

but face facts, corporations enjoy more rights now than gays do. and that's just wrong. core wrong as in evil. there are almost no restrictions on corporate mergers. the repeal of glass stegall ended all but the Antitrust laws which are so weak that we now only have 5 major oil co's when we had about 25 in the 80's.

glass steagal was repeaeld specifically to allow Citibank and Travelers Insurance to complete the merge they had contractually enacted over a year before gramm leach bliley was passed to repeal glass-stegall.... that was like a gay marriage being legally recognised a year after it was done illegally [Wink]

I ask this board in all seriousness, is there another word in the English language that our political leaders have ruled must be defined by the Christian definition? Does requiring a Christian definition invalidate all non-Christian marriages or all marriages performed by non-Christian officiants?

Big, did you know that according to the Statistcal Abstract from the Census Bureau that over 57% of the United States self-identify as Christian? That's getting close to a 'super-majority' even by congressional standards.

Now, (ideally) the government is supposed to make laws that reflect the will of the people(*snort*). Since a unanimous opinion will never be achieved, what the majority desires must weigh heavily on deciding what those laws become.

This is why most people are more than willing to have 'civil unions' made available to whoever wants them. However, as a society, the bulk of the population are not yet ready to classify homosexual partnerships as anything other than an 'alternative' lifestyle...as opposed to a societally preferred lifestyle. As long as that belief is held, trying to change it through federal law (and in most cases state law) will only reap discontent and further disillusionment with the political body in general.

As we've discussed before...legislating acceptance will NEVER work.

However, marriage has nothing to do with religion. It is nothing more than a legal union. I think its funny when ppl say god intended this and that...as if they know what their god intended. Thats crazy talk.

i was once a civil union beleiver SF. i have had gay friends since before it was "cool" to be gay. I never considered that marriage is for gay people. i believe they do deserve the legal rights that any married couple has, and hence, a justice of the peace should be able to perform a civil union on them. they can call their partner their husband wife whatever... but Partner is the aporpriate term..
Legal partners have more rights, corporations and LLCs all have more rights than gay people. it is wrong. I've been happily married for 24.75 years (out of the 25that i've actually been married) and my wife is 24 out of the 25 [Big Grin]

seriously? i don't know too many other people that have been happily married including most of my and my wifes extended family members.. marriage doens't need protecting from gays. It needs protection from married people... none of any of my kids freinds parents are married only once and happy, they are almost all divorcees ...

i have never thought of what gay people are asking for as marriage, but since civil unions actually got banned in several statewide elections in the '04 presidetnail campaign year (Rove did that) he actually used church mailing lists to campaign and rile up the masses to go vote against civil union propostions
i changed my mind after that, if they want to be miserable like everyone else, then let 'em....
heck my new friend (my real estate agent/broker) is on her third husband and has like 5 step kids besides her own three and 2 of them are from the middle marriage... they all seem to consider themsleves one big family and this is Churchgoing MS natives... marriage HAS ALREADY been redefined by the straights.... i have stepsiblings not much older than my own kids, and that is wierd lemme tellya. having your kids play with their aunts and uncles

Is that deflection over to majority rules (which didn't hold true in racial equality, didn't hold true in gender equality, and won't hold true in sexual orientation equality) because you don't have an answer to my question that doesn't undermine your position?

How can Christ not be in the Christian definition of marriage? How can using the Christian definition of marriage not invalidate any other non-christian marriage? How many other words in the English language do our lawmakers require only the Christian definition of?

I am a christian and I feel that gay marriage is a sin. However I feel let same sex marriage commence it does not hurt me as long as I am not committing the sin. As a christian I am faced with with sittuations like this with many different sins such as kiling somebody or adultry. This has always been a battle that christians have faced and the struggle with dealing with the world. In other words if I am not forced by law to to enter a relationship that goes against my beliefs then I don't worry about the law , or wether than that law even exists.

I am a Christian and believe that gay marriage may be a sin. It also may have been overwritten as so much else of the old testament was with the coming of Christ.

No matter if it is or is not I know that lust is a sin. I know that adultery is a sin. I know that Christ has said that if a man looks at a woman with lust he has committed adultery. I also know that Christ has said all sins are equal in the eyes of God and that all judgement is his.

With these pieces put together I can come to only one conclusion. That I am just as much a sinner as any homosexual and for me to deny them the same rights to their relationship as I have with mine is against both Gods statements that all judgement belongs to him and that I am to love my neighbor as myself as well as against the founding principles of this country which was created by those who fled religious persecution.

It is not my marriage that makes my Christianity special. It is my Christianity that makes my marriage special.

white liberals have now redefined what it means to be a racist. A racist is now any individual of any race who: 1) does not toe the line of liberal orthodoxy, or 2) has the temerity to disagree with President Obama on any issue.

Without meaning to steer away from the meat of the argument I would be interested to hear the American Muslim response to the question. It is certainly true that in most Islamic states homosexuality is a crime with severe punishment. In Iran they have executed over 4000 men since the year 1979 for being gay. As far as I am aware Albania is the only Muslim majority nation even discussing the legalization of same sex marriage.

Now...back to America where it is the religious right seeking not only to block gay marriage but trying to create state and federal amendments against it.

however, i am not clear that homophobis is actually Muslim in origin or proscribed becuase i am not well-verese in the Koran itself. However, i have observed first hand that people from Iran and people from Turkey (without knowing their specific religios beleifs or pracitces) have very differnt aproaches to homosexuality and marriage. The Turkish bathhouses? never been, but i have heard stories...

Sorry, Big, my response was not intended to be a a deflection although re-reading it I can see how it looked like one.

To give a direct answer to your question then: I don't know. I consider my vocabulary to be quite expansive...but determining the 'religion' of the terms is beyond the time I care to invest at the moment... [Razz]

That being said, majority rules HAS to come into play here. Anthropologically speaking, there is NO OTHER option if long term stability is to be maintained. If you(we) allow a small number to tell the majority what they must BELIEVE and ACCEPT (and make no mistake, that is exactly what is happening here) you do not get acceptance and tolerance...you get rebellion.

'Officially', Islam forbids it. In practice, however, as long as it's behind closed doors it's generally ignored.

That's the same thing as admitting you know its wrong but as long as you and your buddies outnumber your opponents then "Wadda ya gonna do about it, punk?"

Bull****

That's North Korea talk. That's oppression.

Please pay close attention to the wording here, Big, because every word there was carefully chosen.

quote:
That's the same thing as admitting you know its wrong but as long as you and your buddies outnumber your opponents then "Wadda ya gonna do about it, punk?"

Bull****

I'm not admitting anything of the sort, Big, and I would hope that you would know that after the discussions we've had.

Let me turn the question around...

Who are you (and the LGBT community and their supporters) to tell the majority of this country what their personally held views on what they want the PREFERRED base unit of their society should be?

quote:
That's North Korea talk. That's oppression.
No, Big, you have it backwards. Having a minority tell the rest of the nation what they have to believe and accept is oppression. Majority decisions are the BASIS of democracy.

This is why the individual states were supposed to be sovereign bodies. If one state(read: the people of) wanted gay marriage, they could allow it. If one state (again read: the people of) didn't, it wouldn't be allowed. People could move to where they felt their beliefs were sufficiently represented. That's why the homogenization of states is NOT a good thing. If you don't agree with policy you have nowhere to go.

Look at what you're asking the alternative to be. You'd have a small number of ELITES(substitute any term here you wish, the result is the same) telling the UNWASHED MASSES (again, whatever term you prefer) that they know what is MORAL and the MASSES have to just ACCEPT it and OBEY.

You tell me which option is oppression.

ppl are changing rapidly...and becoming more tolerant . what is now the majority will soon be a minority. Women, and blacks weren't accepted by the majority until their ignorance was replaced by enlightenment. Gay marriage will soon follow. Christianity has to come out of the dark ages sooner or later.

SF, you are mistqaken about the country being a Democracy, we are not a Democracy adn the majority most certainly forbidden access to the power to rule.

this is a common misconception about our system of govt. in fact it is complete myth. call it an urban myth if yuo like, but it lives in the country folklore too.

for instance, i want you to look a how the president is elected. The electoral college CAN in fact vote differently than the common election. the president is not elected IN the common presidential election. the president is elected by the electoral college and there is no law that can stop the electoral college from voting fo the loser in the general common election..

fruthermore, suppose that the common election chooses the Presidnet and his ex-child same sex lover comes out before the elctoral college convenes, they WILL vote to elct the loser in the common general election and the masses will stand up and cheer....
and before you laugh, i am afriad this much more common then we have been accepting... ther is alot of coverup. was Sandusky Gay? most certainly, was it covered up by a major Universtiy on purpose? most certainly.was a disservice done by this to society? most certainly. what could more ironic than a gay short-eyes football coach? not much...

so we know that true Democarcy is nothing more than mob rule. that is why its worng to condone anti-gay marriage issues based in this argumetn, you are condoning mob rule when you use this argument...

the mob is never right dude. and this attitude that i hold is why i am and always have been adn always will be a true Republican, even the party of the GOP is flat out FOS, i wll remain a true republican, and i will wait for ht eparty to come back to it's senses, but i may die waiting, then so be it.
