Alarmist global warming claims melt under scientific scrutiny

June 30, 2007
BY JAMES M. TAYLOR
In his new book, The Assault on Reason, Al Gore pleads, "We must stop tolerating the rejection and distortion of science. We must insist on an end to the cynical use of pseudo-studies known to be false for the purpose of intentionally clouding the public's ability to discern the truth." Gore repeatedly asks that science and reason displace cynical political posturing as the central focus of public discourse.

If Gore really means what he writes, he has an opportunity to make a difference by leading by example on the issue of global warming.

A cooperative and productive discussion of global warming must be open and honest regarding the science. Global warming threats ought to be studied and mitigated, and they should not be deliberately exaggerated as a means of building support for a desired political position.

Many of the assertions Gore makes in his movie, ''An Inconvenient Truth,'' have been refuted by science, both before and after he made them. Gore can show sincerity in his plea for scientific honesty by publicly acknowledging where science has rebutted his claims.

For example, Gore claims that Himalayan glaciers are shrinking and global warming is to blame. Yet the September 2006 issue of the American Meteorological Society's Journal of Climate reported, "Glaciers are growing in the Himalayan Mountains, confounding global warming alarmists who recently claimed the glaciers were shrinking and that global warming was to blame."

Gore claims the snowcap atop Africa's Mt. Kilimanjaro is shrinking and that global warming is to blame. Yet according to the November 23, 2003, issue of Nature magazine, "Although it's tempting to blame the ice loss on global warming, researchers think that deforestation of the mountain's foothills is the more likely culprit. Without the forests' humidity, previously moisture-laden winds blew dry. No longer replenished with water, the ice is evaporating in the strong equatorial sunshine."

Gore claims global warming is causing more tornadoes. Yet the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated in February that there has been no scientific link established between global warming and tornadoes.

Gore claims global warming is causing more frequent and severe hurricanes. However, hurricane expert Chris Landsea published a study on May 1 documenting that hurricane activity is no higher now than in decades past. Hurricane expert William Gray reported just a few days earlier, on April 27, that the number of major hurricanes making landfall on the U.S. Atlantic coast has declined in the past 40 years. Hurricane scientists reported in the April 18 Geophysical Research Letters that global warming enhances wind shear, which will prevent a significant increase in future hurricane activity.

Gore claims global warming is causing an expansion of African deserts. However, the Sept. 16, 2002, issue of New Scientist reports, "Africa's deserts are in 'spectacular' retreat . . . making farming viable again in what were some of the most arid parts of Africa."

Gore argues Greenland is in rapid meltdown, and that this threatens to raise sea levels by 20 feet. But according to a 2005 study in the Journal of Glaciology, "the Greenland ice sheet is thinning at the margins and growing inland, with a small overall mass gain." In late 2006, researchers at the Danish Meteorological Institute reported that the past two decades were the coldest for Greenland since the 1910s.

Gore claims the Antarctic ice sheet is melting because of global warming. Yet the Jan. 14, 2002, issue of Nature magazine reported Antarctica as a whole has been dramatically cooling for decades. More recently, scientists reported in the September 2006 issue of the British journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society Series A: Mathematical, Physical, and Engineering Sciences, that satellite measurements of the Antarctic ice sheet showed significant growth between 1992 and 2003. And the U.N. Climate Change panel reported in February 2007 that Antarctica is unlikely to lose any ice mass during the remainder of the century.

Each of these cases provides an opportunity for Gore to lead by example in his call for an end to the distortion of science. Will he rise to the occasion? Only time will tell.

"Taylor has served as a legal analyst for Defenders of Property Rights, an intern at the Cato Institute, and a member of the Federalist Society." http://www.exxonsecrets.org/html/personfactsheet.php?id=631

"Founded in 1973, The Heritage Foundation is a research and educational institute - a think tank - whose mission is to formulate and promote conservative public policies". Defenders of Property Rights acts almost exclusively under Heritage guide lines to promote right-wing agendas.

The Cato institute is a main source for Fat Rush the Doper and one of the least reliable sources for actual facts in existance.

The federalist Society leans even farther right and promotes class stratification in the Country.

If you insist on posting this garbage, have the decency to at least understand and STATE that it is biased non-factual political propaganda!

Yet the Jan. 14, 2002, issue of Nature magazine reported Antarctica as a whole has been dramatically cooling for decades.

LOL.... this is another good example of the blinded following the Judas goat to the slaughter house...

the use of the term "dramatic" is highly subjective...

as a matter of fact? this particualr example is about as evil as you can get, and here is why:

the Antarctic Penninsula is warming, the very center of the continent is what's a little cooler, and the science is understood,

Global warming, while unrelated to ozone destruction, may play a role in the severity of the annual ozone hole and the ozone layer’s eventual recovery. That’s because greenhouse gases that trap heat in the troposphere slow the heat transfer to the stratosphere, causing it to remain colder for longer periods of time.
“If you have a colder stratosphere, then you could have much longer, colder polar vortices every year,” Mercer explained. “This would allow for [a] larger or longer ozone hole because the ozone hole area is controlled by the size of that vortex.”
The variability in climate change models makes it hard to predict how the greenhouse effect may impede ozone hole recovery, the scientists say.

if you need a simpler 'splanation urn? let me know and i'll break out the crayons

BTW? right after that Nature article came out? this happened:

21 March 2002 14:40 MST

Recent Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite imagery analyzed at the University of Colorado's National Snow and Ice Data Center revealed that the northern section of the Larsen B ice shelf, a large floating ice mass on the eastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula, has shattered and separated from the continent. The shattered ice formed a plume of thousands of icebergs adrift in the Weddell Sea. A total of about 3,250 km2 of shelf area disintegrated in a 35-day period beginning on 31 January 2002.

at that point? the Antarctic Ice shelf (on the Antarctic peninsula) had, by direct observation, decreased by about 40% over 5 years...

Which oil is that?

As the ice caps melt, the ocean deepens, making oil exploration and recovery offshore way more expensive.

If the world is going to be destroyed by global warming as Al Gore and bdgee have projected we might as well look at some of the positive aspects of the situation.

Shipping lanes across the top of the earth making it easier to get relief to all the effected countries. Canada might actually become a summer playground. Crop output in new areas.

I personally bought the new light bulbs projected to save me $40.00 on my electricity.

Anyone else have any positive aspects to the impending crisis at hand?

For a brief period, growing seasons for crops will be longer resulting in more food produced world wide.

In some isolated locations, yes. In others there won't be enough rain and in others there will be intense year long flooding.

Longer growing seasons? That will also mean that the workers in the field will have much more exposure to sunlight, more burns, more skin cancer.....

Many things, andy.....and I have been doing them for many years.

Although climate studies is not my principle area of research, I have been involved in such work since about 1980 and have a few publications of the effects of climate on humans and their doings.

(Actually, I could take that date back before 1980, to when I was involved in studies to track Soviet nuclear bomb detonations by interpreting minute trace element measurements of samples taken across Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. In order to do so with any hope of reality, it was necessary to keep overall, constant, and precise knowledge of weather systems across the northern hemisphere.)

Did you know that it was Ben Franklin that first discovered that world wide ocean current that transfers temperatures from hot to cold and cold to hot oceans and moderates the overall global weather? He did it in order to explain to a poorly educated King that any war waged against the colonies was doomed to failure due to the extremely long supply lines and the Gulf Stream.

King George (a real king back then, not our usurper of the Constitution) refused to believe that a current of such magnitude in the Atlantic Ocean existed or, even if it did, could possibly twart the will of the navy and army of the most powerful military nation on earth. He believed that the might of his armies, along with the will to win, would overcome any obstacal and England would win.

That King George was a fool too.

Or maybe it's the stuff quotient? You feel you can bring twice as much "stuff" and that makes up for it?

No shame to admit that if it's the reason. Half the reason China had their economic boom was the American stuff quotient.
My wife is a stuff girl too. But shes a thrifty stuff girl except when it comes to horse stuff.

that's just stoopid, why does this issue of greenhouse gas undermine capitalism?
you can't have capitalism without civilization, and history teaches US all that civilizations fall when they are improperly managed... the Romans? they used too much lead in their daily life.... and they stretched themselves too thin...

the case studies are fairly straightforward. it's not hard to look back at the behaviour of the "nobles" and see something was dreadfully wrong:
of course there were other influences too: like outsourcing, no lie... they hired too many German mercenaries...

remember this too: the Romans were Republicans [Razz] ....

[Razz]

maybe you could explain to US the reason for "hoaxing" people into believing that the "oil economy" is unsustainable?

i noticed you had no answer when i did some simple cacklations for you demonstrating how much CO2 we are producing....

maybe i should cacklack the volume of that CO2 for you...

what was the weight again?

60 billion pounds per day....

lessee what the volume of gas is according to Avagadro?

6.02 X 1023 X 6 X 1010

damn, the numbers are too big for my little TI cacklacker....

let's try it another way:

CO2 is 1.98 kg/m³ at STP

so 1.98 X 2.2 = 4.36 lbs

m³ = 35 feet3

wow, that's gonnabe a lotta gas huh?

60 billion / 4.36 = 13.76B m³ X 35 = 481 BILLION feet3 of CO2 PER DAY.

lessee if can find something that size to compare it to?

hmmm.... THE AMAZON

The Amazon River is the most voluminous river on Earth, eleven times the volume of the Mississippi, and drains an area equivalent in size to the United States. During the high-water season, the river's mouth may be 300 miles wide, and up to 500 billion cubic feet per day (5,787,037 cubic feet/sec) may flow into the Atlantic.

that's still imaginary for most people tho isn't it?

the Hoover Dam has 4.5 million cubic yards of concrete in it: that's only 121.5 million cubic feet:
There is enough concrete in Hoover Dam (4.5 million cubic yards) to build a two-lane road from Seattle, Washington, to Miami, Florida, or a four-foot-wide sidewalk around the Earth at the Equator.

remember we produce almost exactly four thousand times that much CO2 PER DAY...

is this beginning to sink in yet?

Glass....,

One of the problems almost all of these anti- global warming guys have is lack of scientific education.

Usually, way back in jr-high, it was already clear to them that they weren't going to be too handy in science or mathematics and they marked a path to avoid confrontation with scientific and mathematical thought or knowledge, which, for those that went on to higher education, remained their steerage. It's the way they choose to be.
