I am a recent college grad who is self teaching stock trading/ investing for about a year. since i spend ungodly amounts of time researching/watching for fun, it seems like a good idea to get paid to do it for someone else. anyone know of good ways to break in to the industry? besides cold calling. I am located in Portland, have no professional investment experience, have a BA in Business administration.

some firms offer a short (3-6 mo) training program to get you started handling accounts etc etc. (Capital Group) there are other firms that strictly do research (Bowser Reports) depending where you are there may be something similar in your area. you're the researcher let us know what you find out there.

I would personally prefer a dynamic investing company, that deals with commodities, futures, the more the better so I could learn more about all of these trading markets.
To the "what" question, I would be seeking an entry level postion doing grunt work preferrably in some kind of research, although long term I would be looking for an account management position to work with people.
i am really not too intrested in being a "broker".

Try doing a search on monster for funds/invesments, something like that, in your general area. Not sure if that'll help at all, or if you've already done that kind of broad search.
And start posting the results of some of your research more often. If you've gotten good at it, it'll show in your posts, and maybe you won't NEED to work for someone else...

thanks for the responses everyone.
start at the top...get your particulars together, then see if Berkshire Hathaway has any entry-level jobs...If the answer is no, keep pestering them about alternatives you can follow...

Try contacting an insurance company...private insurance brokers/agents have really started into the securities and trading for individuals...your BA should surely "get your foot in the door"... GLTY!

Not sure if this dude's still around, but I recently found a site that has job postings specifically for market-type jobs. Not a lot out there, and mostly in NYC, but may something to keep an eye on. If anyone's interested, reply here or PM me.
