I have a really stupid question, hope someone can help out here~

what causes the stock price to move, i know the supply and demand.but what bothers me is that
here is an example, if i am trying to sell 500 shares of a stock and then i sold it that means the same time there is a person bought my 500 shares, and the total amount of stocks OS is the same, so if that is the case isn't the price of the stock should stay constant? sold x amount and bought x amount.

tx..

If i catch your question, you are postulating someone somewhere who wants "your shares."

but suppose, for whatever reason, two people--unbeknownst either to each other or yourself-- decide they want your shares...who gets em?

i guess~ kinda of
but here is what u said
100 sell > 50 buy.....or vice versa........you said it supply and demand......that is what drive's the price's up and down

when u say 100 sells but isn't behind the 100 sells there is 100 buys otherwise u couldn't sell it, same as 50 buy~ u know? i know this is kinda of stupid but bothers me a lot~ maybe i am drunk now, i am a mathmaticall kind of person

well tx for your help though~ here is a 5 for you!~

tong, a Market Maker may "match" sellers and buyers, which is what I think you're envisioning. Or the mm may buy for the firm in absence of "matched" transactions...is that where it's spinning yur wheels? Perhaps I don't fully grasp your frustration, but I think you're wondering about the role of the MM....???

yeah i think that is where i got confused.

the role of MM, what do they do excatly do though

i know MM buys and sells the stock to brokerage

firms but how is that effects the marketprice? in

what role they play in the stock market~

i know there are lots of things out there i need

to study, do u have any good books out there i

can read about it? tx

there may be order's in for 200,000 buys and only 20,000 sales....that would be a DEMAND short on SUPPLY, so the price would be drivin' up.......and this works vice versa......just like the real world.....there is not a seller for every buyer or a buyer for every seller.....

GO READ "DAYTRADIN' LIKE A PRO, FOR DUMMIES"

also, a good starting place is right here on-site:

http://www.allstocks.com/edu/

I've heard the "dummies" book K recommends is excellent and need to read it myself. Also, check Amazon...lottsa stuff, much you can read for free to get a flavor before buying.

And, see, this is why we need a entry-level forum on the BB...imho...to collect the best links and past posts, such as realityinc's excellent post from Fri/Thurs...

But 200,000 buys at a price above the 20,000 sells is a standoff! (Nothing happens.)

The price will only move when one of the buyers or sellers succumbs (or someone else trades - up or down, 'at market') that a price move occurs.

that is supply and demand....if the MM's have order's lined up for 1.5mill in buy's and only 200,000 in sell's the DEMAND is becoming apparent so they adjust the spread and the price will rise according to the order's comin' in....
