You often come across the suggestion or assertion that "accumulation is taking place" or this or that stock is "being accumulated" - My question is: What 'tool" would one use to come to this conclusion? In other words: how does one find out? What gives this away...

One way of telling is on the Level II screen where you see a MM more at the bid then ask in small amounts time and time again throughout the day.. to help disguise a big institutions "accumulation" of the stock and not "move" the stock's price...

Machiavelli - terrific...the reason I asked was that I felt I had finally "discovered" accumulation of a company, by using level II...But what I saw was this, someone placing buy orders consistently just within seconds of the close..!! - The company is ClearOne Communications and they are currently trading on the pinks, where I don't have the ability to see bids and asks (very easily) but I can on each day, see the trades made and it was uncanny how someone was able to buy chunks at the last second and without "disturbing" the trading day as a whole. - The next day, the market maker kicks the price down again and the process repeats... It started four weeks ago exactly (from Friday) and I wondered if I had finally discovered "accumulation" - I Thank you for your answer.
