Differences between seismic amplitudes derived from multiple vintages of 3-D seismic reflection surveys have been used to identify hydrocarbon migration and drainage pathways in a "qualitative" sense. 4-D, or time-dependent changes in acoustic impedances inverted from seismic waveforms make quantitative estimating of the petrophysical property changes in hydrocarbon reservoirs caused by drainage and migration of oil, gas and water. Unlike seismic amplitudes, which measure relative acoustic impedance changes of reservoirs, the acoustic impedance is more directly associated with petrophysical properties of sedimentary rocks and the fluids that fill pore spaces. Thus, new 4-D seismic inversion techniques are the "bridge" connecting reflection seismic differences and rock petrophysical property changes related to time-dependent changes in oil and gas volumes within reservoirs.
The time-lapse, or 4D, seismic method involves acquisition, processing, and interpretation of repeated seismic surveys over a producing hydrocarbon field. The objective is to determine the changes occurring in the reservoir as a result of hydrocarbon production or injection of water or gas into the reservoir by comparing the repeated datasets. 4D Seismic, Inc. offers a complete 4D solution from feasibility studies to inversion and history matching, 4D-Ready advanced Q-Technology, and in-depth experience.
