Perlegen in 4-Year Pfizer Collaboration AP MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) - Perlegen Sciences Inc., a biotech spin-off of genetics researcher Affymetrix Inc., said Wednesday it is working with drug maker Pfizer Inc. on a four-year research collaboration.
Shares of Affymetrix jumped on the news, adding $3.29, or 7.5 percent, to $47 in morning trading on the Nasdaq. Over the past year, the stock has traded in a range of $33.94 to $59.73.
The project centers on whole genome and replication studies designed to identify genes associated with certain major diseases and patient responses to certain medicines.
Pfizer and Perlegen scientists began their first collaboration in December 2002, conducting genetic research on thousands of DNA samples in areas such as metabolic syndrome and drug response in patients with Major Depression Disorder.
Under the terms of the agreement, Perlegen and Pfizer will share in certain intellectual property rights and Pfizer will pay Perlegen for research.
Researchers from both companies will conduct whole genome studies involving DNA samples from clinical trials with scientists designing the research and analyzing the results.
Shares of Pfizer rose 8 cents to $23.71 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
