In the same period last year, SGI lost $34.9 million, or 17 cents a share. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call expected SGI to break even.
SGI also said quarterly sales rose 6 percent to $230 million, just matching consensus revenue expectations of $230 million.
Shares of SGI fell 4.9 percent, to $2.70 in after-hours action.
"SGI delivered a solid quarter with a year-on-year increase in revenue, although order rates in North America are not as strong as we had projected," said Bob Bishop, chairman and CEO of Silicon Graphics, in a release.
