HURRICANE Things-To-Do-NOW CHECKLIST
BEFORE the Storms Hit!
NOW IS THE TIME TO PREPARE – NOT AFTER THE WARNINGS ARE ISSUED. Think about it – you can go to Publix and get all the water and sterno and canned staples you need and be out in 10 minutes. You can fill your extra propane tanks NOW in 5 minutes. You can get extra plywood at Home Depot and Lowes NOW in 20 minutes. Top off you car gas tanks NOW! GUESS HOW LONG YOU’LL WAIT IN LINE ONCE THE WORDS “Hurricane Wilma (#4) IS DEFINITELY COMING THIS WAY” ARE SPOKEN BY ONE OF OUR LOCAL METEOROLOGISTS or Dr. Gray ?????? 2 hours? 5 hours? RIGHT !
Have ENOUGH of the following to last you 10 days:
Batteries, Flashlights, Re-Chargeable Flashlights
Portable Radio and TV, Battery & AC/DC Convertible to your Car’s cigarette lighter
PCU Back up Power Sources for your Computers
AC/DC Converter to run Power off your Car Battery for Skill Saw, TV, etc. after storm.
Surge Protectors
Generator (Make SURE you know how to hook it up SAFELY long before storm) Fuel for Generator. AGAIN – MAKE SURE you know what you’re doing and store Fuel Safe. Generator MUST be kept in a wide open space OUTSIDE ONLY.
a WHOLE HOUSE Generator is preferable. It is installed outside and looks similar to your Central Air Conditioner unit. The are a little pricy – but well worth the investment.
EXTRA Propane for your Grille, Also good to have on hand a Charcoal Grill and PLENTY of Charcoal and Sterno in case we have Prolonged Power Outages.
*NOTE - Some people in Coral Springs, Margate and North Lauderdale had NO POWER for almost a month Last Year and the storms were ALL at LEAST 50-60 miles away North of Broward when they made Landfall.
Manual Can Opener, Dry Ice, Coolers. If you take prescription medicine – have at LEAST a 10 day supply left. If you evacuate – don’t forget to bring it with you. (Those plastic pill boxes with the days of week work great).
Start Saving Empty Water Jugs to fill just before storm. Also fill your bathtubs and sinks.
Instant Coffee, Crystal Lite Tea, Powdered Drinks, etc.
Canned Goods and Dry Food Staples, Vacuum packed snacks like Slim Jims, Pop Tarts.
*NOTE – We always donate our dry goods to our Church’s Food Bank every December. It is MUCH appreciated by someone, I’m sure. Just some ‘food for thought’ !
Cordless Drill with 2 batteries AND Wing Nut Adapter (chain it to drill) if your drill uses a chuck, make sure it is attached to drill as well). Also have extra Philips bits on hand.
Toilet Paper, Paper Towels, Paper Plates (Chinette), Plastic Cups, Knifes, Forks, Spoons.
Plenty of trash bags – if we get a bad storm, we may not have garbage collection for WEEKS And you’re going to want to double-bag your garbage for obvious reasons!
EXTRA Chlorine – at LEAST 3-5 gallons. Your Pool and/or Jacuzzi may become your bathtub and you don’t want it green and growing!
If you’re used to using an Electric Razor, buy shaving cream and disposable razors
