I am thinking about investing in SUNW, I've tryed to analyze their books, they look like its getting better and better every year. A press release came out today regarding google and SUNW teaming up to be a rival to microsoft.
Any one think there is potential to make money here?

Back in the bubble of 2000 I did well with MSFT, SUNW, They will really need some blast out earnings to improve to they're old levels.

As an IT/Computer person I can tell you that Sun has been hurting in recent years. However, a lot of large IT departments rely on Sun machines and are still purchasing them. The company has been toying with some new strategies, shifting emphasis from hardware to software for example. They realized they can't make money on an operating system and started giving Solaris (their proprietary Unix OS) away for free. They have also hopped on the linux bandwagon, which will probably be a good thing in the long run.
The Google deal is very interesting to me. I think that the companies probably have plans to do something with the Java programming language. If you have not heard of Java, it is a very popular, relatively new programming language that was developed by Sun (and been consistently attacked by Microsoft). The interesting thing about Java is that it is platform independent. In other words, a Java application written for Windows should also run on a Mac, on a Linux box, and on any other Operating System that has a Java "Virtual Machine" (practically all Operating Systems do). This threatens Microsoft because it threatens their ability to lock consumers into using Windows by making sure software only runs on their OS.
I haven't taken a good look at the technicals of SUNW recently, and Wall Street hasn't liked it lately. But it could be a good long term play. Just my $0.02.
