News for 'SSFT' - (ScanSoft Collaborates with Microsoft to Enable Professional Scanning and Document Conversion for the New Microsoft XPS Document Format)

BURLINGTON, Mass., Sep 14, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- ScanSoft Scanning and OCR Technologies for Converting to XPS Document format Are Showcased by Microsoft at Professional Developers Conference

ScanSoft, Inc. (Nasdaq: SSFT), a global leader of speech and imaging solutions, today announced that it has enabled complete, professional scanning, OCR and document conversion capabilities using the new Microsoft XPS Document format. This collaboration with Microsoft will allow developers and customers to use the XPS Document format within a wide range of document automation applications, including Web and intranet search, document scanning and capture, content management, and digital document workflow solutions.

Microsoft XPS Document is a new file format that will facilitate securing, viewing, printing and archiving of fixed format paginated documents. ScanSoft, the world's leading supplier of scanning, optical character recognition and PDF conversion solutions, will integrate support for the XPS Document format into its range of developer tools and desktop applications, including OmniPage Capture SDK (software developer kit), OmniPage and PaperPort.

"ScanSoft provides a valuable service to the document ecosystem with the addition of support for XPS, Microsoft's new fixed document format in Windows Vista," said Madelyn Bryant-McIntire, Product Unit Manager of the Windows Digital Documents team at Microsoft Corp. "They have created a powerful set of file processing and conversion tools utilizing XPS that can be used in document workflows. Their use of XPS will allow documents to capture all of the resolution of the original source material while enabling more secure distribution. ScanSoft will be able to provide software developers, hardware partners and customers with end-to-end solutions to capture, process and manage XPS Documents."

Developer Tools

The OmniPage(R) Capture SDK has long been the standard for commercial developers to add sophisticated imaging, optical character recognition (OCR) and PDF capabilities to software applications, significantly speeding time-to-market while lowering development costs. ScanSoft will integrate support for XPS Documents into a future version of the OmniPage Capture SDK, enabling developers to import and export XPS Documents, support XPS Document-enabled scanners, and convert to and from XPS and various formats, including PDF, TIF, JPG, GIF, as well as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and Corel WordPerfect.

Desktop Applications

OmniPage Professional(R) 15 is the most accurate and efficient way to convert, edit, archive and share paper and PDF documents, replacing the need to manually re-create paper and image-based documents and simplifying document workflow and archiving through an automated, electronic process.

Organizations adopting the XPS Document format for document sharing and archive will need a solution that enables the conversion of documents from various formats into XPS Document, and the ability to convert image-only XPS Documents into searchable and text-based XPS Documents. A future version of OmniPage will be enhanced to import/export XPS Documents, convert PDF to XPS and XPS to PDF, as well as provide highly accurate OCR conversion for XPS Documents.

PaperPort(R) Professional is one of the world's most popular PC document management applications for Microsoft Windows. By adding support for XPS Documents to PaperPort, ScanSoft enables local and network scanning and management of XPS Documents, and the ability to search and find all XPS Documents - both image only and searchable XPS Documents. A future version of PaperPort will also enable scan to XPS Document format directly from a raw data stream for scanners that do not yet natively support XPS Document generation.

"ScanSoft has a long heritage in imaging and has for many years had the vision and the innovation to propel the industry forward," said Robert Weideman, senior vice president, ScanSoft Productivity Applications Division. "Our support of the Microsoft XPS Document format further underscores our position as the market leader in imaging, and shows our commitment to providing our customers and partners with the best technology available with support for the largest number of formats, to increase productivity."

ScanSoft support for the XPS Document format will be available following the release of Microsoft Windows Vista (formerly code-named "Longhorn").
