Before the Bell - E*Trade, Ameritrade shares rise

NEW YORK, May 9 (Reuters) - Shares of Ameritrade Holding Corp. (AMTD,Trade) and E*Trade Financial Corp. (ET,Trade) rose before the bell on Monday following a Wall Street Journal report that E*Trade has formally expressed interest in buying its rival.
Shares of E*Trade rose 8 percent on the Inet electronic brokerage system to $12.90, up from its New York Stock Exchange close of $11.93 on Friday. Ameritrade climbed 23 percent to $13.90 on Inet.
