St. Vincent Carmel Hospital Installs Indiana's First FONAR Upright Multi-Position MRI

New Suite Establishes Hamilton County Hospital as a Leader in Diagnostic Technology

CARMEL, Ind.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--St. Vincent Carmel Hospital announced it is the first in Indiana to install the FONAR (NASDAQ:FONR - News) Upright(TM) Multi-Position MRI and open a new state-of-the-art suite for patients needing the cutting-edge technology. The Upright(TM) Multi-Position(TM) MRI is one of the most technologically-advanced imaging systems currently available that allows patients to be comfortably scanned while standing, sitting, bending or lying down.

The technology was purchased from GE Healthcare, which is the manufacturer's representative of FONAR.

The patient-friendly MRI scanner provides dynamic image quality to ensure accurate diagnosis for physicians and alleviates patients' claustrophobic reactions from the conventional tubular MRI scanners. The nine-foot, $1.5 million device can hold patients up to 500 pounds.

A traditional MRI requires the patient to slide into a tunnel lying down and remain at a constant horizontal state, while the magnetic fields rotate around the body during the scan. The Upright(TM) Multi-Position(TM) MRI allows patients the convenience of being scanned in numerous weight-bearing positions, offering a higher level of comfort.

"The major significance of the FONAR Upright(TM) Multi-Position(TM) MRI is that it allows for more definitive and improved diagnostics," said James Hardacker, MD, orthopedic/spine surgeon at St. Vincent Carmel. "Previously, we were forced to work with an image from which we could only assume what the difference might be if the patient were in the upright position that actually produced the pain. Now, we have the ability to view the patient in an ideal situation, so we can obtain more accurate information to make a better diagnosis."

Well Respected, Board Certified Surgeon Purchases FONAR Upright Multi-Position MRI to Obtain the Accurate Diagnoses That Will Lead to Optimal Patient Care
Thursday November 30, 7:30 am ET

MELVILLE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--FONAR Corporation (NASDAQ:FONR - News), The Inventor of MR Scanning(TM), today announced that Jack Shapiro, M.D., a Board certified surgeon from New York, who has performed over 10,000 surgeries during his career, has purchased the FONAR Upright(TM) Multi-Position(TM) MRI.

Dr. Shapiro said, "Having previously been an owner of MRI scanners, I am well informed on the MRI industry. After evaluating the various MRI scanners, there was a clear and indisputable significance of the FONAR Dynamic(TM) Upright(TM) Multi-Position(TM) MRI over that of a static recumbent single-position MRI. These unique advantages provide surgeons with the full range of physiologic and dynamic evaluation of the spine to assure patients the optimal surgical outcome. The concept of a weight-bearing physiologic scan adds a new dimension to imaging, as well as, diagnoses and treatment."

"I visited the FONAR exhibit at this year's annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA)," continued Dr. Shapiro. "On display was the FONAR 360 MRI. Some day it will revolutionize surgery. The use of the FONAR 360 in its intervention mode will provide a solution to Base of Skull Surgeons, providing them with an instant angiogram without having to change operating theatres. It can provide multiple solutions for the neck and spine surgeons utilizing the new dynamic real-time scanning capabil
