prisoners would definitely get therapeutic activity out of it, i know i did and i ain't even prisoner

Do you think if they had Koi farms in prisons where they raised and cared for them that the rate of prison violence would go down? Was watching a show earlier and it was talking about how prisons are so overpopulated it is impossible to give one on one attention to any problems. Prisons are just temp housing units and they send them back out into the population.

I am all about paying your dues, but we can do better than what we have. I do NOT want to go the way of places like Sweden where you can murder a ton of people on an island and then only get 15 years.

exactly cash, they would learn quite few things that apply across th board, and they'd have something to make living worhtwhile instead of the usual fighting ang trading contraband.. might even make a living with what they learned after they get out...

Are you sure they won't just make sushi out of them.

Then you have the pond of water.

I guess Raybond would be the one to answer that question.

Yes this would be perfect for prisoners amgong many other great programs. I use to recommend many good solid things but most were turned down. All the state seems to do is recomend more cost cutting and more burtality.

Federal corrections would be your best chance of starting this program.

so i guess my wife was listening in on this topic cuz she just talked me into adding a 1200 gallon pond right beside the 400... now i'll have enough space to keep a pair of adult KOI the liner was 140$ -
that's about 1/3 what i aid for the hard shell liner i bought for the 400 gallon pond... i better go put a new edge on the shovel [Big Grin]

hey R1 glad you chimed in here. I am desigining my second pond right now. I'm not in a huge hurry cuz we don't know how long we will be here, but if i sit around waiting my whole life for other people to get off their butts and do something? i'll prolly die waiting. so do you think 1200 gallons is enough to keep a couple of adult koi to breed?

i am going to 3 feet deep for the summertime heat. I've already got black bamboo at 20 feet to provide some shade in summer, and next year it prolly will hit 25 feet.....

Gallons:

L x W x Average Height x 7.5 = Gallons.

Liner sizing.

L = L +2D +2.

W= W +2D +2.

Its cheaper to build a pond once then to do what I've done 4 times. You can find pond pictures on my website to give you ideas. www.michigankoisupplier.com

Fish stocking:

Take total gallons and divide by 10. So a 1,200 gallon pond should have 120 inches of fish or less. For you to breed, I'd go bigger. What types are you looking to breed? Is Koi popular where you live?

Liner needed is 45Mil. Do not buy 20 Mil. It will leak in a few years. Do not buy roofing liner (60 Mil). The chemicals used to make the liner leaches chemicals into the water that hurts fish. Buy your liner off EBay. Look for Pond-Depot, Graystone-Creations or TriumphetGlobal. They have great prices.

Filter:

Make this one. Buy tub off craigslist. Here is the link.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmhiyDCRTVM

You can also make a bog which is easy. Take that tub and run 2" PVC in a "U" shape to the bottom of the tub. Cut small holes in it for water to leak out of the PVC. Fill bottom with Lava Rocks. Top it off with Pea Gravel. Put various plants in it to be creative.

Pump...look on EBay for that. You need to pay attention to the WATTS. Some will drink energy like it was Kool-aid. Get something around 2,000-3,500 GPH that uses 160-225 Watts.

I have a pool pump and I plugged it in for 2 weeks and my energy bill jumped $120. So a good pump will pay for itself.

Call me if you have any questions. Number is on the website.

If you need any Koi, I can get you shipped some for way less then you would spend at a pond store and better quality.

Keep me posted.

Remember this...you can CHEAT your pond size buy overdoing your filtration. So you make your pond 1,200 gallons and make the Skippy Filter. You would still have a 1,200 gallon pond but 3,000 gallons of filtration allowing you to 2.5x your fish density. I know a guy who has a 3'x6'x3' pond. Only 405 gallons. He has 8 20"-30" Koi in it. Plus 50+ 3"-7" Koi. He is pushing limits I never thought was possible. But his filtration allows him to cheat water quality.

i like the gin matsuba butterfly koi and the platinum butterfly, i don't mind a littel bit of orange. i know the purist look down on th ebutterfly KOI and for good reasons, they are a hybrid, but i am going for an effect and they fit the esthetic i amlooking for... i have this set up outside my studio, and i go and take breaks in my own littel koi garden...

I am not going into the biz unless we get some pond acreage which is cheap here right now because the catfish industry is dead.... lots of ugly catfish farms available cheap here... but when i say ugly, i really mean they are not places to hangout unless you like watching the birds- we even have bald eagles her enow... no trees, the feeders are all industrial looking, you know a real working food operation...

if i found the right catfish farm? then i would seriously consider it... but here in MS there is very little interest in things not food or booze... and that even goes for blown glass... i work at the glassblowing from Thanksiving till April solid- 29 days per motnh 12 hour days...so i don't ned a full time job... I plan to buy a dozen or two 4-6 inchers and see who grows up to breed. i can't bring myself to pay breeder prices yet without the experince and a trak record of success... i raised 5 of twelve to 14-17 inches and my pond was too small, they only took one year to get that big.. most of th eones i lost were due to them jumping out - i tried to post a picture i took here, but the format i use is too big to post on these pages.. my wife likes to edit all my photos and i like to set them up and shoot them, in my KOI photos, i dug the pond, grew the water lilly from a root ball the fish i raised from 2 inches to 10 or more at the time i shot the photos, so i can say that i spent two years and countless hours of work to get a few really good shots... i'll ask the wife to transfer the copies that i can post here...

i grow black bamboo and banana trees around the koi pond, so it's creates nice pleasant atmosphere... i have room to put this 1200 gallon pond in and make it look right by raising the pond edge 8 inches higher above grade than the first pond. I will have to spread lot of dirt at the edges to make the landscaping right, but i think it'll be worht it. That way the big pond will spill into the little pond thru a small {possibly lighted)spillway, and the filter system will have a ( possibly lighted) waterfall that goes back into the bigger pond...

as to the breeding? i just can't seem to keep animals without trying to get them breeding.... but no, i don't have customer base for the fry or small fish here... it's striclty hobby for now....

this is unreal. i found that because i was a subscribr to these guys FB (ben seigel) for awhile cuz i breed some geckoes and i was studying their FB marketing techniques (mostly for glass). i had to unscribe them cuz they were posting like 5-10 time perday and it was getting annoying. if they posted less often (IMO) it would be a very good marketing strategy cuz i could see how they were penetrating the marketplace with likes and shares and getting quite a few scribers...

anyway they ran this midnight contest the winner gets an 850$ baby python... the contest was to see who could eat the most bugs... cockraoches and tobacco hornworms. I posted to them that they should NOT use tobacco hornworms cuz they eat toxic plants and part of their defense mecahanism is to isolate the toxins and 'sequester" them in their bodies.... they get poison from tomatoes tobacco and potatoes to name a few.....

one of my FB friends who followed this with me shared this with me today:

Man dies after eating roaches

Tuesday October 09 2012

The winner of a cockroach-eating contest in Florida died shortly after downing dozens of the live bugs as well as worms.

About 30 contestants ate the insects during the contest at Ben Siegel Reptile Store in Deerfield Beach, about 40 miles north of Miami. The grand prize was a python.

Edward Archbold (32) became ill shortly after the contest ended and collapsed in front of the store. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

the pet shop is running wild on FB to get exposure. they are auctioning off animals every hour or so cuz ebay won't let you sell live animals....

somebody suggested a contest to see who would eat the most bugs to win an auction... eating most bugs is no big deal, but certain caterpillars like hornworms are deadly toxic... almost anything else would be OK.. there aren't that many toxic insects, but this is one of 'em, and i friggin told 'em...

it seemed harmless at first, then somebody brought up the hornworms.... i was kinda surprised that anybody would even feed them to their animals cuz they are toxic if they eat toxic plants. i grew tobacco last year adn had then all over the plants- mostly ruined my crop... but i couldn't feed them to the chickens or my geckoes- i knew this, but these guys didn't listen to me when i told them not do it, just like you cash cow [Wink] don't vot for romeny he'll crash the economy again... LOL JK...

seriously? i told them in plain english.... it is possible this is something else like allergic reaction or something, but i just couldn't believe it when i got 'shared' the news article cuz i friggin told 'em straight up- don't eat the hornworms.... morons... sheesh...
