SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Despite deep cuts to public education, California's standardized test scores have gone up for the ninth year in a row.

The state Department of Education on Monday reported results for the 4.7 million students who participated in the 2011 Standardized Testing and Reporting Program.

The STAR test results show that 54 percent of students scored proficient of above in English-language arts and 50 percent reached that level in mathematics.

Officials say those were the highest percentages in both subjects since the STAR program began in 2003, when only 35 percent of students scored proficient or above in each category.

But the data shows continuing disparities in the academic performance of students of different races, with the scores of African-Americans and Latinos trailing far behind those of whites and Asians.

hard to say...IMO they are primarily geared to make sure English remains the unofficial official language in some places where English is "in danger'

on the other hand MS (where English is not "in danger" ) they now require the kids to pass them to graduate to the next grade, yet we are still 50th in education...

teaching all this to the lowest IQ levels does a couple of things, it takes resources that are already thin from the brightest, and it ensures that someday your garbage collector will have Masters degree [Big Grin]

the brightest are becoming discouraged tho, and that will be our biggest loss, just as having our "brightest" all go to Wall St has been over the last two decades...

financial services are a Need, but today's financial services system only serves itself anymore.

That's one of the things that doesn't really make sense.

I think it should be be left up to the teachers grades and discrection for kids to move on, not a random test.

In some areas i feel these tests run kids out of school because of the lack of help and other things that make learning very difficult, which in turn makes it hard to pass these tests.

I look at different areas around here and some are more suited for better education especially at the lower levels.

My grandsons area where he lives has such a good education system, although class size is a bit large because of so many kids.

What do those tests really mean in the longer run of education?

I know in the math testing my grandson max it with a score of 600 out of 600, but im not sure it means much other than i don't think he got the brains from my side of the family. [Smile]

It isn't so much that liberals are ignorant. It's just that they know so many things that aren't so.
