Everytime they try to slow the leak they end up putting back pressure on the well and the sea floor spews oil. This is why you see Skandi roaming around the sea floor... The fear they have (and rightfully so) is that if they attempt to actually block the leak the sea floor will shatter upwards.

they have determined the well pressure is 8700 PSI, and the water pressure at that depth is about 2300 PSI... this is prolly why it blew in the first place and the 6000 PSI differnece may blow what's left of the well...

Yep, they've been pumping the Corexit directly into the gusher for quite some time now in the hopes that the oil won't reach the surface.

quote:Corexit 9527, considered by the EPA to be an acute health hazard, is stated by its manufacturer to be potentially harmful to red blood cells, the kidneys and the liver, and may irritate eyes and skin.[22][13] The chemical 2-butoxyethanol, found in Corexit 9527, was identified as having caused lasting health problems in workers involved in the cleanup of the Exxon Valdez oil spill.[23] According to the Alaska Community Action on Toxics, the use of Corexit during the Exxon Valdez oil spill caused people "respiratory, nervous system, liver, kidney and blood disorders".[15] Like 9527, 9500 can cause hemolysis (rupture of blood cells) and may also cause internal bleeding.[4]
Fun stuff for sure.
quote:According to the EPA, Corexit is more toxic than dispersants made by several competitors and less effective in handling southern Louisiana crude.[24] On May 20, 2010, the EPA ordered BP to look for less toxic alternatives to Corexit, and later ordered BP to stop spraying dispersants, but BP responded that it thought that Corexit was the best alternative and continued to spray it.[3]
An overwhelming act of concern for the general public.

I honestly didn't think this would work right...looks like my pessimism may have been misplaced.
If they get through tomorrow without problems...buy BP stock.

Ladies and gentleman, the new theme song for BP, this is a paradoy of BP having a conversation with the U.S. Government:
There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza, There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, There's a hole.
Then fix it dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry, Then fix it dear Henry, dear Henry, fix it.
With what should I fix it, dear Liza, dear Liza, With what should I fix it, dear Liza, with what?
With a straw, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry, With a straw, dear Henry, dear Henry, with a straw.
But the straw is too long, dear Liza, dear Liza, The straw is too long, dear Liza, too long.
Then cut it dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry, Then cut it dear Henry, dear Henry, cut it!
With what shall I cut it, dear Liza, dear Liza, With what shall I cut it, dear Liza, with what?
With an ax, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry, With an ax, dear Henry, an ax.
But the ax is too dull, dear Liza, dear Liza, The ax is too dull, dear Liza, too dull.
Then, sharpen it, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry, Then sharpen it dear Henry, dear Henry, sharpen it!
With what should I sharpen it, dear Liza, dear Liza, With what should I sharpen, dear Liza, with what?
With a stone, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry, With a stone, dear Henry, dear Henry, a stone.
But the stone is too dry, dear Liza, dear Liza, The stone is too dry, dear Liza, too dry.
Then wet it, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry, Then wet it dear Henry, dear Henry, wet it.
With what should I wet it, dear Liza, dear Liza, With what should I wet it, dear Liza, with what?
With water, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry, With water, dear Henry, dear Henry, with water.
But how shall I get it?, dear Liza, dear Liza, But how shall I get it?, dear Liza, with what?
In the bucket, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry, In the bucket, dear Henry, dear Henry, in the bucket!
But there's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza, There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, a hole. There's a hole.

i watched Adm. Thad Allens press conference today.
Considering how much information he presented clearly and concisely,
Considering that the Coast Guard is not in the oil biz, and how many epxerts he has had to work with, and how much info he has had to absorb, how many difficult desisions he's had to make based on what has to have been alot of conflicting data?
i'd seriously consider voting for him for president.
i know alot of people have alot of reasonable criticisms of this situation, but nobody is perfect. It sounds like the well is capped well enough right now that if we ot a hurricane? the workers could bug out and be safe until it passes. They still need to plug the thing all the way with cement thru the releif wells to call this part over- cleanup will last years...
