After his convalescence, the ailing dictator reimposed his authority—quashing hopes of internal reform and détente with the United States.
quote:
When Raúl Castro became president of Cuba in 2006, he raised hopes, at home and abroad, that he would usher in a new era of reform. His brother, El Comandante Fidel, was struck with some sort of intestinal illness and rendered incapable of governing. So in stepped Raúl with promises to undertake "structural" change in the country. He distributed parcels of idle land to farmers. He encouraged young people, many of whom feel restive about their country's system, to "fearlessly debate" the country's problems. He decreed that Cubans could finally buy cell phones and computers, and could stay at tourist hotels that had previously been off-limits to them. When it came to relations with the United States, he said last April, "We are prepared to discuss everything—human rights, freedom of the press, political prisoners—everything, everything, everything."

I can't believe Castro is back. This guy is just so old and stuck in his ways and it's pretty obvious that nothing will change while he is still around. I give him 5 years unless he signed some kind of deal with the devil....

I agree Raybond, the guy is a fossil and his days are numbered, but I fear what Castro might do now that he is back in power. He has seen where Raul stands, and I don't think he liked it. IMO, before he croaks, Castro will take dramatic steps in order to ensure that Cuba continues according to his "vision" long after he is gone.

I don't know much about Raul, but it seems like he is a little more in touch with the people of Cuba than Castro. Don't get me wrong, I don't see Cuba going straight to democracy after Castro is gone, but ANY change towards more freedom for Cuba is good IMO.

We need to come up with a way other than force or waiting for these crusty tryants to die in order to create positive change in a country gripped by dictatorship...

Che Guavera was a doctor that went revolutionary.

he ended up being Executed in Bolivia.

this article makes him sound better than he was IMO. he was responsible for a lot of people getting dead.

He's got more lives than a cat...but, so did Hitler.

We should get Russia down to Key West and point some nukes at him, and see how he likes it...
