This is a post from another site..just wanted to offer this up..
In 1980 i decided that I did not belong in the USA as this was not a culture I was comfortable with. As I was not fluent in any other language and wanted to live in a country that has a good lifestyle, good climate, political stability, etc. this left only Australia and New Zealand. I emigrated and gained residency in both (with some difficulty). My background in horticulture and crops that were considered new and desirable for these countries made this possible.
I live a lifestyle most in the USA can only dream about unless they are very wealthy. And if you are wealthy in the USA you are preoccupied with walling yourself off from the masses as they are clawing at ways to take it all away from you.
It is wonderful to be in a culture that does NOT elevate material wealth above all else. How you live your life and achieve personal satisfaction/success are of much more importance here. These are more egalitarian societies where financial strata are not barriers. Health care (why are Americans so afraid of this?), education, and equal opportunities are a given. We can call our parliamentary representative (= congressman) on the phone as they are listed in the phone book. The Prime minister can be replaced at any time, and elections can take place sooner if necessary (due to a hung parliament). The cabinet ministers (the people who have real power and are responsible for portfolios like defense, education, health, etc. the same as your president's cabinet) are all elected instead of being political appointees.
Americans have a strange notion that they are the most free nation on earth. Seems to be a notion fostered by a lot of stay at home types. You ought to get out more often.

Anyone that wants to move to Australia or New Zealand is free to do so. I would guess they are not so welcoming of outsiders who want to live off their system as we are here in the USA.
I would not want to live anywhere else but in the USA....but that's just me.

just to be clear..i didnt write that post...copied from another website...I would never advocate living anywhere else, or not, unless I have experienced it firsthand..the only reason I live in the usa is because i was born here...I have no idea what it is like to live elsewhere..Im glad that you have such a vast wealth of knowledge of living abroad..I envy you..

Damn, I'm just as unneeded/unwanted/unnecessary there as I am here. The search continues.
