A defense official speaking on condition of anonymity to the AP says Hasan was a mental health professional an Army psychologist or psychiatrist. He recently trained at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
There are unconfirmed reports that Major Hasan was a convert to Islam and originally from Virginia. He was reportedly scheduled to deploy to either Iraq or Afghanistan and was unhappy about it.
It goes without saying that the fact that the shooter was a Muslim will turn this into a gigantic story.

STORY: Army: 12 dead, 31 wounded in Fort Hood rampage
WASHINGTON Military officials say the suspected shooter at Fort Hood was a psychiatrist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for six years before being transferred to the Texas base in July.
The officials had access to Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's military record. They said he received a poor performance evaluation while at Walter Reed.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because military records are confidential.
The Virginia-born soldier was single with no children. He was 39 years old.
Sources told News 8 that Hasan was born in 1970 and is of Jordanian descent.
He is a graduate of Virginia Tech University, where he was a member of the ROTC and earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry in 1997. He received his medical degree from the military's Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., in 2001. At Walter Reed, he did his internship, residency and a fellowship.
Sen. Jay Bailey Hutchison said Hasan was to be deployed to Iraq, and there were indications he did not want to go, ABC's World News reported.

Surviving Fort Hood shooting suspect arrested at golf course, officer says November 5, 2009 6:34 p.m. EST
(CNN) -- A senior officer who was playing golf Thursday near Fort Hood, Texas, told CNN he witnessed the arrest of one of the two surviving suspects of the shooting at the Army installation.
Shortly after the shooting, the officer said, military police told him to clear the course and he saw other MPs surround the building that held the golf carts, he said.
The senior officer said he ducked into a nearby house for cover as 30 to 40 cars carrying MPs approached.
He said he saw a soldier in battle-dress uniform, his hands in the air. The MPs ordered him to lie on the ground and open his uniform, presumably to ensure he was not carrying explosives, the senior officer said.
He said an MP told him that authorities considered the man to be a suspect in the shootings after having overheard the man say he was with the shooter.
The man was surrounded for 25 to 30 minutes, until a convoy of vehicles arrived, led by a Ford Crown Victoria and carrying men in suits, and he was taken away, the senior officer said.
The golf course is about 2.5 miles from Fort Hood, the officer told CNN.
AP: Officials had concerns about Fort Hood suspect
By LARA JAKES (AP) 1 hour ago
WASHINGTON Federal law enforcement officials say the suspected Fort Hood, Texas, shooter had come to their attention at least six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats.
The officials say the postings appeared to have been made by Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who was killed during the shooting incident that left least 11 others dead and 31 wounded. The officials say they are still trying to confirm that he was the author. They say an official investigation was not opened.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case.
One of the Web postings that authorities reviewed is a blog that equates suicide bombers with a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his comrades.
"To say that this soldier committed suicide is inappropriate. Its more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause," said the Internet posting. "Scholars have paralled (sic) this to suicide bombers whose intention, by sacrificing their lives, is to help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers."

KILLEEN, Texas (KXAN/AP/MSNBC) - Major Malik Nidal Hasan, accused of killing 12 and wounding 31 in an attack at Fort Hood on Thursday, is alive and in stable condition, Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said at an 8:30 p.m. news conference.
Counter to initial reports, the 39-year-old psychiatrist - who was thought to be killed by local police - is hospitalized and not expected to die of multiple gunshots wounds sustained during the 1:30 p.m. attack. The local police officer who allegedly shot Hasan and injured him is in the hospital also in stable condition.
Cone also told reporters that Hasan was carrying one handgun and one semi-automatic weapon. But the fact that there were so many injured, apparently by one man, "counter-intuitively is concern," Cone said - spurring officials to continue their investigation to make sure they haven't missed any other shooters.
OK- Police questioned two soldiers, who were apprehended at the Soldier Readiness Processing Center. Witnesses saw people exiting the scene and entering other buildings, which led to the questioning of these soldiers. They were later released after the police were done interrogating them.
what about the guy at the golf course?
either all of the media has been real poor at getting the story (likely) or the story is being manipulated...
how did so many miss the fact that the perp was not dead? that sounds like manipulation to me.

How did they miss the other two "Bigger" bombs in the OK City bombing? I don't credit any news organization with an excess of accuracy... However.. when they all report the same thing on a story I tend to listen... Especially when the story later changes and no one goes back to correct the earlier version...

I would imagine there will be tighter security when entering these military bases.
There will most likely be a step up in security around the weapons area also.
I am realy surprised how layed back security is at some of these bases especially after 911.
Seems like they should do a quick check of trunks and inside cars, especially of non active and non military people.

What a god awful shame 13 unarmed people gunned down. The world is going to get a lot crazier pretty soon. And I don't know if I will even comment on it. The best to do is say a prayer go on and try to help when you can to the best of your ability.
