Four Shot, Hostages Held in Binghamton, N.Y., Newspaper Says
Share | Email | Print | A A A

By Chris Dolmetsch

April 3 (Bloomberg) -- Four people were shot and about 20 taken hostage today at the offices of a refugee aid organization in Binghamton, New York, the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin reported, citing officials and police.

A SWAT team was sent to the scene, neighboring apartments were evacuated and Binghamton High School, a block and a half away from the American Civic Association, was locked down, the newspaper said. The association helps immigrants and refugees with citizenship and resettlement issues.

The gunman had a high-powered rifle, the newspaper said, citing Mayor Matthew Ryan and scanner reports. Four people were removed on stretchers and taken to hospitals, and as many as 41 people may have been in the Front Street building, it said. Binghamton is about 170 miles (273 kilometers) northwest of New York City.

13 dead... so much for law abiding immigrants trying to do the right thing about obtaining citizenship and yet another massacre caused by a GUN(s) not a knife, pipe etc... what is this? the 3rd mass killing in a month in this country? Do we see this phenomenon as much in other countries with less guns prevalent?... Were' suppose to be the most civilized nation in the world, or so we boast, yet we have the biggest lunatics yet we call other areas of the world the lunatics...

This guy fits my profole as far as poverty and economic conditions and crime. Say no more than layed off from IBM and took it out on people here applying for citizenship.

I know there are some of you that think I am for gun control and that is not so I love guns own them and have very good ones.

I am for economic justist in the world and elimination of poverty wich in turn would stop 90% of this crazyness.

That goes without saying... like Darfur, Bosnia, Myanmar etc... but that is a totally different ballgame then someone having a bad day from being laid off or whatever other excuse and mass killing people who didn't do anything to him... my only concern in this thread is civilians killing civilians...

Stricter guidelines for gun ownership should be imposed. For example imo only citizens should have the right to own guns in this country. Once you get your citizenship then you should be able to buy a gun. Perhaps this guy wouldn't have been able to obtain guns if that was the case.

Plus I think the current background check system is severly flawed. Probably outdated and should be looked at again to make improvements.

And another thing gun sales out of houses should be outright banned. Guns should only be sold out of a storefront and not out of private homes or city to city/state to state gun shows.

My suggestions probably won't stop illegal gun ownership outright but if it saves one life because 1 individual was not able to obtain a gun to commit a crime then it's worth it.

As far as I know no one knows why he did it yet if they ever will find out. But my guess is him being laid off and probably some other problems obviously caused it and he wanted to attack what is the symbol of the American dream for immigrants: Citizenship.

He wanted to make a statement and purposely choose immigrants getting ready for their citizenship. He probably said to himself that he was doing all the right things to gain citizenship and obtain the American dream and now looked what happened: he got laid off, probably got denied for his application for citizenship etc.. etc.. etc.. in his deranged mind.

I read in the news that he was already a naturalized US citizen FWIW.

he hunted where he was familiar...

he was a student there recently.

The American Civic Association, a small nonprofit resettlement agency financed largely by the United Way, has resettled 53 refugees through its Binghamton center since 2004, most of them Vietnamese who studied English as a second language there. It operated quietly for years, its officials said, and seemed an improbable venue for a murderous attack.

Little was known about the assailant Friday night. Cautious officials declined to name the gunman, but there appeared to be little doubt about his identity. The name Jiverly Wong was provided by a law enforcement official who declined to be named because he was not authorized to release information.

But the official said Mr. Wong had a New York State pistol license that listed two handguns, apparently the weapons he used at the immigration services center: a .45-caliber Beretta and a 9-millimeter Beretta. The authorities matched the serial numbers of the two weapons found with the gunman’s body to the serial numbers on the pistol license. Officials said they were trying to trace the histories of the guns. Other public records indicated that Mr. Wong had also lived in California in recent years.

pistol license means he was a citizen.

he had no criminal record, but his neighbors say he hated America... yet he killed people from Viet Nam whare he was from...

I learned to shoot when I was 8 yrs. old at a range on the base my dad was stationed at. I loved it and kept it up for a few years. Still fascinated with guns but I prefer not having to worry about getting shot. We don't have the gun problems you guys have to deal with, yet. But "your" gun's are killing us more and more. Bla Bla Bla guns "don't kill people" ya sure. Common sense not political correctness please. Guns do the job too fast and too easy and do not allow for a cooling off of hot headed idiots.

I know all the bad guys have guns now. No control, or not enough gave them the guns. It would be nice to start over and limit who gets them.

A long time ago I read the US has more accidental gun deaths yearly than all of the next top ten civilized country's added together, adjusted for population. That's sad. That's a lot of friends and family dead.

We don't have gun crimes that can't be prevented by armed citizens... The problem is the red tape involved that leads to a citizenry largely unarmed and sitting ducks.
The answer is NEVER more rules.

Yah, whose license is the question. Plus no news reports yet say he was a citizen, only that he was a student there. If he was a student there doesn't that mean he wasn't a citizen yet since they were all studying for the citizenship test?

A long time ago I read the US has more accidental gun deaths yearly than all of the next top ten civilized country's added together, adjusted for population. That's sad. That's a lot of friends and family dead.

My kids were taught early on how to climb trees, how to walk a balance-beam, how to look in the shadows, how to handle a knife...

and so on.

I'm not positing "my family" as a role model: any of my family might die tonight, me included--as many here know...

Point being, though, survival is not enhanced by a "turning away from," but rather by an "embracing the facts of"...

I think it's important for my children to know how to balance a checkbook, how to shop well for nutritious food, how to recognize major symptoms of vehicle malfunction...et cetera--and also how to deal with the savage.

Now...re: the savage: I don't care whether my children stave off the savage with a brick, a knife or a gun--or humor, or diplomacy.

Bottom line, it's all about DNA, so call me an egoist if you want, but I think I've proven my interest in community, justice, and fair play.

So it doesn't bother me if savages claim otherwise.

The point is balance.

Would those other things used as weapons ,excluding guns, kill 13? You and I both know it wouldn't, because the people there would overtake the knife wielder or escape more easier.

But as always when I talk about this topic everyone automatically assumes I mean banning guns. I don't recall i said that in this thread. What I did say is to update the current background check system because it is probably outdated and to make it more difficult for criminal minds to obtain guns via banning gun sales by gun "dealers" via private home sales, banning gun sales via gun shows etc. Guns should only be sold via store fronts.

So again where did I or anyone else say we should ban guns in THIS thread?

Mac, This was posted above by Relentless. I never did learn how you post the quote with the name on it. It doesn't copy for me. And to answer your question yes you could kill as many as you want sitting on top of a building with a bow and arrow or crossbow. Get some manure and whatever else Timothy Mcveigh used and kill a few hundred. Leave me in a room with 5 people and I bet I could kill all of them with a knife, a machete and I could kill more. The list of weapons is endless. I bet the major fear in Iraq for our soldiers isn't being shot but rather IEDs.
