Chavez interested in nuclear help from Russia

(CNN) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Sunday said he was interested in working with Russia to develop a civilian nuclear power program.

 -

His statement at a televised political rally in Caracas, Venezuela, followed a trip to Russia, where he met with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev.

"We certainly are interested in developing nuclear energy, for peaceful ends of course -- for medical purposes and to generate electricity," Chavez said, noting that Brazil and Argentina have such programs.

He said Russia offered to help Venezuela develop a nuclear program, though CNN could not immediately verify his claim.

Still, on Friday, Putin said he and Chavez discussed "new opportunities" for cooperation between the two nations.

Russia also gave Chavez a $1 billion credit line for weapons to develop military ties between Russia and Venezuela, the Interfax news agency reported.

Topics of Chavez's discussion with Medvedev included joint Venezuela-Russia naval exercises scheduled to take place in November. Earlier in the week, Russia dispatched a naval fleet of warships to the Caribbean, led by the Peter the Great nuclear cruiser.

Russia is making a point. If we want to "play" in their backyard? They'll "play" in ours...

because we, and they, can...

messing around in Georgia is just plain irresponsible.

The real problem is the complete lack of diplomacy. As Glass so aptly brought up, we, the U.S. are playing in Russia's backyard. Not only with Georgia but with the Ukraine, Poland, Afghanistan, Iraq.

Russia isn't looking for a war but are flexing their muscles in the U.S.'s backyard to show a bit of tit for tat. South and Central American countries are tired of U.S. intervention in their affairs. The U.S. has for too long attempted to force our ideology on them instead of making them partners in our fights. So, is it any wonder that some of these regimes rebel and look to another Power to even the field?

The U.S. philosophy of democracy being right and all else being wrong is as arrogant as the British were that caused the U.S. to rebel especially when we have so many skeletons in our closet. Could you imagine the vetting of the U.S. by journalist if it were running a campaign for re-election or Election?

Didn't I warn ya about Russians and Chavez? ... but you dismiss it as we would invade the next day etc... this is being done at our weakest financial moment... it's not a coincidence...

Eactly...that's why I posted it. It seems like the whole world can see how The U.S.A. is very volnerable right now...and are positioning themselfs to advance their own country if possible. Either through oil warfare, financial warfare...or actualy war.

well, it seems to me that the only people that don't see how vulnerable we made ourselves is the GOP candidate and his base...

the Pentagon knows it, most of the people know it, and Bush has to know it if even if he won't admit it...

Machiavelli, Glass, you might find this article interesting...

http://www.worldtribune.com/wta/Archive-2001/eu-russia-05-15.html

And? If you look around early 2001, you will find Russia signed many of these type of "cooperation agreements" with many countries such as Iran (March 2001), Iraq (April 2001), Venezuela (May 2001) and China (June and July 2001).

Nobody paid much attention back then, especially after 9-11, and some even laughed the "cooperation agreements" off. Yet, we now see some of these "cooperation agreements" coming to fruition.

If you ask me? The cold war never ended... It just went underground.

Relax,

Russia is not willing to sacrifice itself to topple the US. That is what would be required.

I agree keep a close eye on Venezuela but this isn't even about Georgia. This is about that damned missile defense shield being planned for the Czech Republic and Poland. Georgia was just a slap to make sure the other neighbors remember who is across the ocean and who lives next door.

When you engage in actual fighting, if victory
is long in coming, then men's weapons will grow dull and
their ardor will be damped. If you lay siege to a town,
you will exhaust your strength.

Again, if the campaign is protracted, the resources
of the State will not be equal to the strain.

Now, when your weapons are dulled, your ardor damped,
your strength exhausted and your treasure spent,
other chieftains will spring up to take advantage
of your extremity. Then no man, however wise,
will be able to avert the consequences that must ensue.

Sun Tzu was very wise. One of the finest(if not THE finest) books ever written.

hey? isn't this what's happening to US right now?

Therefore the skillful leader subdues the enemy's
troops without any fighting; he captures their cities
without laying siege to them; he overthrows their kingdom
without lengthy operations in the field.

No question about it. It is. Sun Tzu's words are as true today as when they were penned. His understanding of human nature and the various forms of both direct and indirect conflict is awe inspiring.

If your enemy is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him. If your opponent is temperamental, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant. If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them. If sovereign and subject are in accord, put division between them. Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected.

Like saying Georgia was a U.S. political maneuver without stating by whom?

Bring war material with you from home, but forage on the enemy... use the conquered foe to augment one's own strength.

Like using western money from oil sales to augment their own economy?

yeah, and so much more...

it's just ubelievable to me that Bush had so much hubrus that he believed he could make a whole new set of rules for basic human behaviour.

in many ways he has done exactly the opposite of the common sense that Sun Tzu professed that i have to wonder if it hasn't been deliberate...

Sun Tzu said: Raising a host of a hundred thousand
men and marching them great distances entails heavy loss
on the people and a drain on the resources of the State.
The daily expenditure will amount to a thousand ounces
of silver. There will be commotion at home and abroad,
and men will drop down exhausted on the highways.
As many as seven hundred thousand families will be impeded
in their labor.

true, the F22 is awesome, but people still build them and fly them...

and people have not changed...

we have the power to destroy, so what?

the power to create is the power that matters.

and we have severely damaged our own power to create by budget deficits, trade deficits and overborrowing...

And an illegal and immoral war in Iraq, that forces the rest of the world to not want to be involved in anything we might do.
