Personally I think he should be in prison for years, but hey if you are elected official I guess you get off easy instead of harsher. First of all I doubt I could vote for someone named KWAME lol

Detroit is a city in trouble. It is basically the Democratic stronghold of Michigan. It also has forced a lot of business out of Michigan due to high high taxes. They probably raised the taxes so much to milk the auto companies. That is just my opinion though. The city council of Detroit looks more like a Black Panther assembly.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to two counts of obstruction of justice and will step down as the mayor of the nation's 11th-largest city as part of a deal in a sex-and-misconduct scandal that has plagued the Motor City for months.

Kilpatrick also pleaded no contest to assaulting or obstructing a public officer as part of the agreement.

He'll serve two concurrent 4-month jail sentences and pay the city $1 million over a five-year probationary period. Kilpatrick cannot run for elected office during his probation and loses his law license.

"We cannot tolerate, in any form, corruption in this town," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said outside court, adding that "responsibility taken without consequence is no responsibility at all."

Kilpatrick's resignation was entered along with his plea Thursday, though the 38-year-old once dubbed the "Hip-Hop Mayor" will remain on through Sept. 18 to help City Council President Ken Cockrel Jr. take the reins.

When asked by Wayne County Circuit Court Judge David Groener whether he understood that his plea would mean relinquishing the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty, Kilpatrick responded: "I think I gave that up a long time ago, Your Honor."

The plea deal ends months of wrangling for control of the city in the Kilpatrick case.

The embattled mayor, who previously refused to resign, faced 10 felonies in two cases, one an apparent cover-up of a racy text-message relationship with his then chief-of-staff Christine Beatty. She still faces charges in the case and will appear again in court on Sept. 11.

The mayor's wife, Carlita, also attended the hearing Thursday.

Kilpatrick's guilty pleas Thursday were related to two instances where prosecutors alleged he committed perjury — on Oct. 11, 2004, and Aug. 29, 2007.

"I lied under oath in the case of Gary Brown and Harold Nelthrope versus the city of Detroit," Kilpatrick read in court, referring to the October incident. "I did so with an intent to mislead the court and the jury to impede and obstruct the fair administration of justice."

He went on to say that he lied under oath twice more.

Kilpatrick pleaded no contest to a July 24, 2008, incident at the home of his sister, where he acknowledged shoving two police officers who were trying to serve a subpoena.

Set to be sentenced on Oct. 28, Kilpatrick will be sent straight to jail following the court appearance, Worthy said.

The mayor's resignation was what prosecutors had wanted all along, Worthy said outside the courtroom.

"The resignation was never, ever a bargaining chip for me," the prosecutor said. "He could have resigned right away; my position would have been much more favorable if that had happened. It did not help that the region was dragged through this."

The plea deal came as Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm prepared for the second day of a hearing to determine whether Kilpatrick should be removed from office. It was to convene at noon.

Detroiters, meanwhile, prepared for the future.

Cockrel, the city council's president and three-term councilman dubbed "Shrek" by a colleague in April during a heated debate — is set to serve as interim mayor until a special election can be held.

"It's a sad day for Detroit," Tom Cameron, of the Michigan Attorney General's office, said after the hearing. "We're looking forward to moving on."

I have a 100% different opinion of Kwame. Before he was Mayor, Detroit had GARBAGE on streets, Junk/stollen/stripped down cars on streets. Lots of depressing areas. He took office, the Cars are no longer on streets....until recently. Downtown looks tons better. He brought us the Superbowl, Final Four, Allstar Game, And many more. Problem we had was the idiots in Detroit City Counsel. They need to get rid of those idiots. I think he was a good mayor, just didn't give up the street life. Don't care for the cover ups and the stripper getting murdered.

Now Kwame pot Elli Bully-Cummings as police chief. Notice she RESIGNED today as well. Actually right after Kwame. What does that tell you. I know Kwame had her doing some BS work. Taking his kids to school, cover ups, etc.

If you noticed his PLEA. He said he Lied, covered up the firing of the police who stood up and cried wolf. He said he obstructed justice many times. But key is, he Plead NO CONTEST. That means he doesn't admit or deny and therefore can not be sued by the police who got fired, and the other BS things.

Still, you take a top 3 most dangerous city and do what he has done. I think he did a good job over all if we overlook the street life he did.

I forgot, he had them issue TICKETS to home owners who had GARBAGE, JUNK cars, Housing not neat. Those tickets were ranging in the thousands. My buddy's neighbor got tickets totaling $18,000. That is how you make a city BLIGHT clean up fast.

No R1...he pled GUILTY. His legal troubles are far from over. BTW...he wasn't the most corrupt mayor Detroit has ever had (Coleman Young was) but KK was by far the most arrogant. He did do some good things for the city his 1st term, but he was crooked from day one...
