Close Window Japanese prime minister announces resignation Monday, September 1, 2008 TOKYO - Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda has announced his resignation.
Fukuda made the surprise annoucement Monday evening in a hastily called news conference, bringing his term to an end less than a year after he took office.
The 72-year-old has suffered from chronically low support ratings as he presided over a parliament split between the ruling party and the opposition.
He did not specify when the resignation would take effect.

In a parliamentary system, with the resignation of the 72 year old leader, a completely new government will be formed.
Sadly, here, if a 72 year old won the election and resigned a year later, it would be his pick as a vice president that would become the leader of the Nation.
