Well I thought I would start off an Olympics thread by saying WHAT THE HELL

This is in regards to "Chinese Taipei" and the Taiwan flag being changed to an Olympic flag to make sure mainland China is not that butt hurt over the situation. I think Taiwan should have flown their national flag. Oh well just another gripe about China.

Other than that I am enjoying the ceremony on T.V. tonight....that birds nest ended up turning out to be a very nice stadium. The performances were well prepared for as well.

Is that bad? lol I am only 28, and I can remember when I was younger how much I loved to watch the olympics. Havent seen too many of them, but you know the olympics in beijing is kind of a big deal. The opening ceremony wasnt too bad...got to root on the USA! Competing against the world in physically demanding events is inspiring to make me want to keep in good shape!

Watkins Glen Nationwide series Qualifying is on ESPN. Go Kyle... That Joey Logano is gonna be a good'n

I went to the Glen last year, sat in between turn 1 and the start finish line. Got to see Tony win for the first time live! It sucked though cause he didn't climb the fence, I wanted a picture!

I'd rather just watch it on TV as you can not see the entire track from your seats.

Bubba, you just won the olympic gold for badmitton!! What do you have to say about that?

"It was a physically demanded game played by both sides, with the stronger side prevailing as the victor. Go USA!"

Reminds me of Rob Schneider, in multiple Adam Sandler movies saying, "You can do it!"

Interesting. I may not be 90 and am much older than 28 but I do enjoy the Olympics.

I thought last night's opening ceremonies were not only entertaining but very polished.

I think the Dara Torres story is compelling, maybe because she is older and doing great, younger than me but old in comparison to her competition.

I just saw that she won her 10th Olympic Medal spanning 24 years of competition. That is amazing considering how the Olympic sports seem to be dominated by the very young.

There are many sports in the Olympics that are true tests of athletic ability even Badminton not that I'd want to watch Badminton.

I understand that there has been enough political interference and drug scandals to cause many to be jaded however nothing in sports can transcend the look of a young athlete winning a Gold Medal.

Yes, I do know that it's no where near as pure with corporate and state sponsorships but I would rather suspend disbelieve for this than for many of the movies currently playing since I can view the Olympics for free yet have to pay $10 and up to see a movie.

Just my take nothing more.

Oh by the way, Women's beach volleyball rocks and Women's swimming and diving aren't bad either. Yah, I know, I'm a dirty old man but I love it.

Yesterday afternoon I saw part of an olympic match in some sport they never bothered to say what it was called during the hour or so I watched. Does anyone here know what it might be.

It was match between women's teams, one Russian and one Korean. (Both groups were amazingly agile and athletic, but the Russian girls were, on average, quite a bit taller...and strikingly better looking.)

There were about ten players per team, playing on an indoor court about the size of a basketball court, with a soccer-like net at either end and with a half ellipsoidal region in front of them that seemed to delineat a limit on where an offensive player might launch a shot at the goal.

The game was played somewhat like soccer would be, except the 5 or 6 inch ball (it looked to be oblong too, like a small football) was not kicked, but passed and dibbled as in basketball.

At one point the Russian team had amassed an 8 point lead (18 - 10, I think) and seemed to be on the road to an easy victory, then with about 5 minutes remaining, the Korean team put on a display of athletic prowess that jumped them to the lead for a while. Eventually, the game ended in a tie.

And I still never heard what it is called!!!

It's called handball. It's kinda like water polo without the water.

The olympics have started off pretty good.

That handball game seems like a good basketball-baseball player would excell at, not the handball game i was expecting when i saw the first match.

We have the boxing matches starting which i am not sure how they even count points even though the front of the glove is suppose to be the point scorer?

The best is yet to come, the track and field which seems to have lost interest in the last 20 years. I still love it and like to see who will be the worlds fastest human.

My kids and grand kid 5 year old (the other two our to young) like it, we have been practicing his starts for the sprints. [Smile]

Trouble is it's easy to spend a lot of time in front of the TV.

Thanks, Pagan...

Yes, I had the same thoughts about a "good basketball-baseball player would excell" at it at.....a fascinating game full of the kind of agility that a good shortstop/second baseman show in turning a really good double play or a great pass and shoot making an alley-oop in basketball.

I'll watch for more of that "handball".
