in San Diego Co. alone.

Hundreds of thousands flee California wildfires

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Wind-whipped wildfires raged unchecked across California on Monday, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people and besieging homes from Los Angeles to the Mexican border.

At least 10 fires were blazing throughout southern California with thousands of firefighters struggling to contain flames that have ripped through tinder-try hillsides and parkland following months of record-low rainfalls.

One person has been killed, more than 20 people injured and 84,000 acres (34,000 hectares) destroyed in the fires, which have reportedly forced the evacuation of 250,000 people in San Diego County alone.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has declared a state of emergency in seven counties to help battle the fires, described the escalating crisis as a "tragedy" for the state.

In San Diego, where seven fires were burning, the Witch Creek Fire, which has been burning since Sunday, jumped Interstate 15 into the densely populated Rancho Bernardo neighborhood as authorities ordered hundreds of thousands of residents to leave their homes. It merged with a smaller fire that broke out near the San Diego Wild Animal Park and moved toward the wealthy suburb of Rancho Santa Fe. By late morning, more than 30,000 acres had burned. Authorities said an untold number of homes had also burned.

Qualcomm Stadium, home to the NFL Chargers, was added to a growing list of evacuation centers.

Flames also forced the evacuation of the community of Ramona, which has a population of about 36,000.

Mandatory evacuations were ordered in several communities in the San Bernardino mountains, where 1,500 homes were threatened. Two fires were burning about 400 acres west of Lake Arrowhead and in the Green Valley area.

We are getting hit hard by the Santa Ana's. Looked like it might be slowing up this morning but has really picked up again. Lots of smoke here from the fires in Irvine and Tustin. Malibu hit hard to.

i experienced pretty heavy Santa Annas a couple times when i lived in Riverside. no fires tho... not like this.. the Santa Anna's are like a hot, dry, dusty tropical storm to hurricane force wind if you've never been in them...

I live about 1 mile from the beach and it feels like the desert. I am guessing the winds here are between 30 and 40 mph right now and the temp around 85. For me no complaints, but for those people and fireman in those areas of fires i feel bad. I expect that state of emergency to expand if the winds do not slow up soon.

Crazy weather here temp still at 85 at beach and starting to get even stronger winds. Smoke is horrible tonight yet sky is real clear. Just talked to a local school teacher and kids were being kept inside today. I imagine the hospitals are having a nightmare with respiratory problems.

I have a good friend in the Ramona area where one batch of fires is burning. I talked to him about noon time and he was on alert to to be evacuated. Last night he said the winds woke him several times blowing about 60mph.

Still nasty temp is already 90. Winds have been blowing all night had to keep all windows shut to keep dust down, smoke got real bad about 4am woke me up with super headache. I felt like i had a hangover but none of the fun getting there.

Think were in for a few days more from what the weatherman said. Tried to call my friend in Ramona to see if he had to evacuate but all the circuits have been busy, this was on my cell phone do not remember that happening before.

I've only had that happen once, when the 35W bridge collapsed. Had service but couldn't make a call for close to an hour. A few text messages got in and out though.

Looks like we might be getting a break. Maybe all we needed was for the weatherman to say we would have the winds till at least Thursday.

Walked out on the pier a little bit ago no wind and a almost red sunset absolutely beautiful, perfect summer day. Can finally open the doors again without getting dust and ash.

Congressman Duncan Hunter said Wednesday morning that 14 military water-dropping helicopters will be ready to fly today to assist in the battle against the county's wildfires.

Cal Fire officials have agreed to let the choppers fly with a lead plane carrying one of Cal Fire's spotters, Hunter said.
Previously, officials would not allow the helicopters to assist unless a Cal Fire official flew in each aircraft, Hunter said.

The fleet includes six Marine helicopters, six from the National Guard and two from the Navy. They will be staging at North Island Naval Air Station and should be ready to go this afternoon, Hunter said.

I talked to that friend of mine again this morning. He was telling me that they have been playing some games between departments. There have been loaded fire retardants sitting on ground waiting to be dropped but several groups were arguing whether to let them go. One of the Local Congressman stepped in and said they will be dropped today, we will see. Politics between departments or otherwise always seem to come into play no matter what.

He also said our Governor has really done a good job down there. He is spending a lot of time in the San Diego fire areas keeping updated.

The smoke is real bad today again. Feels like we have a fire in the fireplace with the damper closed. Kids activities are pretty much shut down the kids are going stir crazy. My grandson's soccer has already been canceled for the weekend.

With all the smoke in these fire areas you wonder how they ever get the smell out of their house.

I had some carpet go in a house a lot of years ago that had been gutted out and deoderized after a small fire in the house and the smoke smell was still terrible. Maybe they have better methods now days to get rid of the smoke smell.
