Got an offer in the mail today from our power company, We Energies. For about 10.00 more per month they claim they will match 100% of my usage with purchases of renewable energy, wind, solar, landfill gas and small hydroelectrics. Note that I will not be using these sources, they simply claim they'll be purchasing them in the amount of my monthly bill and will be a part of their overall energy distribution. Don't know if I trust them, would you do it?

Have they been trustworthy in the past? (I know...loaded question for an energy company.) Their literature should also state where they are getting the electricity from. And what does the extra money go towards? Does it go towards building renewable energy infrastructure or does it go towards the presidents year end bonus? This should also be stated in the literature if they are being reputable.

Hey Bigfoot, According to the literature they sent me, 49% of the energy would come from wind sources, less than 1% from solar, 8% from small hydroelectrics, and 42% from landfill gasses. Again, they claim that the additional monies would be used towards the purchase of these types of energy which would in turn be a part of their overall power supply mix.
In addition to the extra 10 bucks or so, they claim they will match my power bill 100% towards the purchase of these renewable sources. So, according to their literature, my total bill plus the extra 10 bucks or so would be earmarked for clean energy purchases on their part which would be a part of their total energy mix.
Problem is, I'm a skeptic. I see it as a way for them to pick my pocket for a bit more. If there was some way to insure they were holding up their end of the deal, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I would be the same skeptic, up. Let them prove it by putting in their share first, publically, and accountably. Thereafter, I could decide if they were doing a fit job BEFORE THEY GOT MY SHARE.

One will get ya ten that they would use your 10 bucks to lobby the leg, but claim they were buying renewable energy.
