BEIJING/LONDON (Reuters) - China is on course to overtake the United States this year as the world's biggest carbon emitter, estimates based on Chinese energy data show, potentially pressuring Beijing to take more action on climate change.
China's emissions rose by some 10 percent in 2005, a senior U.S. scientist estimated, while Beijing data shows fuel consumption rose more than 9 percent in 2006, suggesting China would easily outstrip the U.S. this year, long before forecasts.
Taking the top spot would focus pressure on China to do more to brake emissions as part of world talks on extending the United Nations' Kyoto Protocol on global warming beyond 2012.
Thirty five developed nations have agreed to cut emissions under Kyoto and they want others -- especially the United States and China -- to do more.
"It looks likely to me that China will pass the United States this year," said Gregg Marland, a senior staff scientist at the U.S. Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC), which supplies data to governments, researchers and non-governmental organizations worldwide.

.....And who's fault is that Gordo?

LOL, well that is a surprise... I thought you were gonna say GWB.
How is it my fault Gordo? Wait wait... I know... It's my fault cause I voted for GWB?
Seriously though...
What about politicians that opened up trade with China? Can they be blamed?
How about Americans that bought "made in china" back when they could have bought "made in America" and didn't simply because the Chinese goods were cheaper? Can they be blamed?

Carbon emissions.....Had a lady go off on me when she found out I worked for the railroad. Her comment was that our big dirty locomotives were the worst polluters out of all vehicles. Now think about this for a minute. A "Z Train" which is a high priority intermodal/piggyback train at say 5200 feet carries a lot of trailers and containers. Probably in the neighborhood of at least 300 containers/trailers. That's 300 semi trucks off of the freeway. Also, the new locomotives we are getting from GE tend to be as "green" as possible. They burn less fuel and put out less exhaust. The new Dash9/44C's and AC 4400's have all knds of features built in to increase efficiency and cut down emmissions.

Not to mention the safety benefits of removing those trucks from the highways... I swear every time I get on a major interstate I see at least 1 big rig truck driving like a total maniac...

So here is a serious on-topic question for anyone out there who wishes to address it.
BTW, you might have to really stretch the imagination with this one but bear with me...
Suppose Bush, the American public and the Big oil companies have a suddden change of heart tommorow and stop 98% of carbon emissions emitted by the US...
What the heck are we gonna do about countries like China and Russia that could give a rat's a$$, (if you will excuse the crude terminology), about the environment, or countries that are too poor to switch to "green" energy?

Lets cross that bridge when we come to it rather than assuming there is an impassable bridge that is only in your imagination and declaring we can't, NR. Why must you constantly assume inadequacy on the part of America in order to bolster your limited views?
I don't have any doubt that America and Americans are quite capable enough to do it all, become energy independent of fossil fuels and convince the rest of the world to join us, granted you and your kind stop the destruction of every effort to do so.
What make you such a non-believer in this Country....so anti-American?
