Anyone out there who uses RTK GPS on a regular basis? Seems like the last 3-4 weeks the number of satellites in the sky in the afternoons has dwindled to only 5-7. Someone I know who works with a different company mentioned that they are experiencing the same problem. Anyone have any clues as to what is going on?

Glass, for the kind of accuracy a farmer needs, there shouldn't be a problem. You really only need 5 satellites to acquire a position accurate to within a few feet.
For surveying however, you need an accuracy of a few hundredths of an inch. It can also be gained with only 5 satellites but doesn't happen very often. Ideally you need 9-10 satellites to get lock with that kind of accuracy within a reasonable amount of time.
Lately though, there seem to be only 5-7 satellites available after about noon. This is including GLONASS satellites, the Russian version of GPS.
I have no clue what is going on and neither does Trimble, the maker of our GPS system but they said they have had numerous calls over the last few weeks with surveyors complaining about lack of satellite availability.
Just wondered if anyone out there has a clue, I'm starting to get frustrated and it is really putting a damper on the amount of work I can get done during the day.
