NEW YORK (Reuters) - The number of U.S. households boasting a net worth of at least $5 million swelled to an all-time high in 2005, according a report released Wednesday by consulting firm Spectrem Group.

The report, "Affluent Market Insights 2006," is based on data gathered through mail and surveys of 1,014 respondents from September 2005 to November 2005.

Spectrem, which specializes in the affluent and retirement markets, said a record 8.3 million U.S. households are worth at least $1 million, excluding the value of a primary residence.

i read a statistic somewhere that there are more millionaires in america than unemployed.

why do you think that is.
a. economy is awesome and people are raking it in
b. inflation is making it so 1 million isnt really all that much anymore.

Yes, it is the fundamental precept of the republican party that their purpose is to use government to take money from the poor and transfer it to the pockets of the rich.

BWAHAHA bdgee, when I read that comment by Special J over an hour ago I knew you wouldn't be able to resist chiming in....

How is it going with your 24/7 Bush/Republican bashing agenda anyway? Have you seen your buddy 4Art around lately?

9 Trillion!

Those brand new millionaires don't own nothing. They made their money with the tax cuts B gave out using foreign capital borrowed to keep us afloat and pay for our war. All their stuff and everything else bought in the last 4 years belongs to Saudi Arabia, China, and every other country we could squeeze a dime outta.

And more millionaires than unemployed??? TK, you are believing government numbers again...

The unemployement rate only measures people currently on the Unemployement payroll. Once unemployement ends they take you off the books weither you have a job or not. The true unemployement rate is estimated between 8 and 10%. And that doesn't even take into account the illegals hanging on the cornerside waiting for a day job.

No TK, this whole nation is hovering on the brink of bankruptcy right now. That is....unless Bill Gates wants to plop his entire fortune into the blackhole of our national debt.

Let's see... At his height of power before 2000 his net worth was approximately 100 Billion...

9 Trillion minus 100 Billion.... Great!

Using the entire fortune of the wealthiest man in America we were able to bring the national debt down to 8,900,000,000,000!

That's approximately 1.1% of the total due!

Wait...didn't congress talk about raising minimum payments on credit cards to help individuals get a handle on their debt...Uh Oh! We better find another Bill Gates and ADD few more millionaires to swallow next month in case that happens!

Even though it seems to be a bit beyond your limited imagination, as well as your ability to read, it is fact. The mechanism is more than a simple or direct transfer (much like money laundering of any kind), so it probably does seem to you to be invisable....I'm not surprised it escapes the vision of the unseeing or ignorant. For generations that fact that the Earth is round escaped the believers even though it has been known as a matter of calculation since the time of the ancient Babalonians scholars. Indirect inferences often are unseen by the masses, particularly the "believers", who like to claim they are humorous. Rememer the line from the song, "They all laughed at Christopher Columbus.....".

I'll ask you a couple of questions.

Do you think at all, or just obey whatever tenets are passed down by the Party or Fat Rush, the Doper or Fox News?

Are you still fostering the notions that Saddam had WMDS and direct ties to Al Qaeda?

Have you learned to accept that the Administration is a bunch of liars and the Party is guilty in that charade too?

geez, bdgee, you sure know how to suck the fun right back out, too! You must be a true visionary, a product of our current school system. So where do you think the money for entitlements and benefits to the poor come from to begin with? Enlighten this old-schooler with your new vision. I do not intend to argue with you - your politics can remain yours, forever. But, dang, that was hilarious! In all fairness, even though you failed to answer my question, I'll give your questions honest, direct, and complete responses...

I'll ask you a couple of questions.

Okay, but 'couple' = 2. Unless you are new school.

Do you think at all, or just obey whatever tenets are passed down by the Party or Fat Rush, the Doper or Fox News?

By process of elimination, based on your options, I will answer with the foremost - I think occasionally. Since nobody has handed me anything, including tenets, that rules out the Party (which party?). I don't listen to or watch Rush, so he's outta there. BTW - I used to rep for a company that marketed a candy (hyped - gonna be famous because Rush likes it), and nearly got fired because I didn't know who he was. I am assuming you refer to Rush as the Doper. If not, then I don't know who that is. Fox News is good for 10 minutes or so, but I'm not much of a TV watcher - so they can't be blamed for my ignorance, either. I do enjoy reading - Discover Magazine is on the top of my list. Do you think Discover is causing my ignorance?

Are you still fostering the notions that Saddam had WMDS and direct ties to Al Qaeda?

I didn't think I was fostering notions such as these, and upon deep reflection (spent a whole 2 seconds on my one brain cell), I find that I never did foster them.

Have you learned to accept that the Administration is a bunch of liars and the Party is guilty in that charade too?

Yes! But I'll bet you are too young to understand that all parties, all administrations, have been this way from the beginning. Now, the politicians just don't bother to hide it. Every now and then, I find a true statesman in their midst, but most are just politicians.

bdgee, face it, you are funny. GL with your future visions.

It's clear you never leaned a lot about Harry Truman.

Actually, your the kind that "assumes" you know something and have something worthy of saying, when in fact you have nothing but an early 19th century argument supported by i4th century intellect and knowledge. It is clear you are fool enough to imagine you originated the backward arguments you regurgitate. It's sad......

You don't know what you are talking about, but repeat over and over what you believe is popular, making the critical mistake of believing what is loudest is most popular and what is most popular is logical and correct.

If you don't listen and follow Fat Rush, the Doper now, I suggest you return to doing so, as all your line of BS has been his for decades.
what you profess is what got us The great Prevaricator in the first place.

And I assure you, you have NO idea who I am or what or why and you haven't shown the depth to have any hope of learning, either.

Try your arguments on some high school sophomore where that degree of sophistication has a hope of success.

Okay, bdgee, so you just don't read very well at all and/or you aren't capable of considering honest viewpoints (instead, they are regurgitated arguments). It's difficult for me to find logical connection between our comments, but I did honestly answer your questions.

I sound like Rush? I thought he was far right. Extreme right - extreme left, makes no difference. Both extremes are minorities. The rest of us try to apply balance and settle for the lesser of two evils.

Who is the great Prevaricator? Clinton? It sure can't be Bush, he isn't so great at prevarication.

If you want to be heard and understood, speak (write) to your audience. I see many young people that have potential and great ideas, but fail to be recognized because they lack communication skills. Lashing out from anger, belittling comments, slurs and slams, will not win the day.

But you are still funny.

TT, you are a crude jerk. Why not try to not misquot and misrepresent what othewrs say? Or is it that you simply are as dumb as you make out to be and have no idea how rude you are? You spout the Party line directly from the far right and claim to be moderate, just like The Great Prevaricator. As of now I cut you out as qualified to be heard.

crude jerk, dumb, rude... I accept these labels, and can attest to the accuracy of each one in it's own circumstances and context - and could add more onerous labels. I don't agree with the far right comment. It sounds like Rush successfully panders for the moderates, but I will check out his show to see what his message is. Who speaks for the far left these days? Just so you know, my two choices for the last two big events never made the democratic ticket. Much to my dismay, it came down to the usual - lesser of two evils. Keeping an open mind is important to me, but not so open that my brains fall out.

Livin, my apologies to you for usurping your thread for this off-topic off-topic banter.
