Republican Convention Protesters Sue NY on Arrests

NEW YORK - Protesters and onlookers arrested during the Republican National Convention sued New York City on Thursday and said police had violated their free speech and other constitutional rights.

At least two suits filed in Manhattan federal court said police detained more than 1,800 people during the convention, many of whom were not involved in illegal activity or who were not even demonstrators. Both suits were filed by the New York Civil Liberties Union.

The cases seek unspecified damages and a court ruling finding police mass arrest tactics unlawful so they will not be used at future demonstrations. The plaintiffs said one method used by police involved trapping large groups of people on the sidewalk with mesh nets.

Among plaintiffs is a dance teacher who was arrested while she was walking to work near a demonstration in the Union Square area of Manhattan. The suit charges she fainted and went into convulsions during the time of her confinement.

The suits were filed one day after the Manhattan district attorney's office said it would not prosecute cases against 227 protesters who were arrested on Aug. 31 during one of the most disputed demonstrations of the convention. Prosecutors said it would be difficult to prove the protesters had deliberately defied orders.

The convention was held Aug. 30-Sept. 2. The city had no immediate comment on the suits.

BUT?

illegals get special treatment???

what's wrong here?

Over 200 Republican Convention protesters remain in Philadelphia jails
By Tom Bishop
12 August 2000

Use this version to print

As of August 11, 228 demonstrators arrested during the Republican National Convention remained in Philadelphia jails. Those released continued to recount incidents of physical and psychological abuse, including hog-tying leading to bleeding and extreme pain, beatings, sexual abuse, withholding of medications, and overcrowded cells.

Over 150 of the imprisoned protesters have begun a hunger strike to demand that District Attorney Lynn Abraham meet and negotiate with their lawyers. Abraham responded by saying, “Get a life. It's not going to happen. They can remain guests of the commonwealth for as long as they wish.”

Many of those being held continue to practice jail solidarity, meaning they will only identify themselves as John or Jane Doe. They are doing this because they to not want to leave behind individuals whom city officials consider leaders, for fear these prisoners will be isolated and brutalized.

Judges have said they will not release people who withhold their names and addresses. One demonstrator who was serving as a medic during the August 1 demonstration said he “repeatedly gave officers his name, but he was automatically tagged as a 'John Doe'” and not released until August 5.

At a press conference August 8th called by the R2K Legal Team, which provided legal observers during the demonstrations, leaders of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) and Philadelphia community activists denounced the prison abuse, excessive bail, and police tactics during the demonstrations as a politically motivated effort to suppress freedom of speech.

Convention protesters demand more visible space
Boston plans more officers, cameras, closures next week

Sunday, July 25, 2004 Posted: 12:55 PM EDT (1655 GMT)

BOSTON, Massachusetts (CNN) -- Protesters at the Democratic National Convention say their designated area outside the FleetCenter infringes on their safety and free speech rights.

At a news conference Saturday, protesters also complained that the fenced-in area is out of sight to most delegates and passers-by en route to the arena. The convention begins Monday. (Special Report: America Votes 2004, the Democratic convention)

"We are very alarmed that our First Amendment rights have been undermined to the degree that the city of Boston now thinks the rights of free expression, the right to rally and protest means you get out into an area like this," said Leslie Cagan, co-founder of United for Peace and Justice, who likened the protest area to an internment camp.

The area, with a small stage, is surrounded on three sides by a wire fence with razor wire on top. A dozen U.S. Army troops joined Boston police inspecting the space Saturday.
Thousands of local, state and federal officers are helping turn the city into a veritable fortress. Extra "eyes" will be watching the FleetCenter after more than 100 high-tech video cameras were installed, according to The Associated Press.

Fencing has gone up around critical buildings, and those who want to enter must pass through security checks.

it's hard to believe that American citizens have been treated so badly..
i don't know what the politicains are thinking, but i bet there's a lot of money involved...
for each and every Senator.. [Razz]

i'm thinking somebody needs to find out how the Mexican government taxes the money coming from the US workers sending it back....

i also remeber recently that the Mexican Army crossed into the states to "protect" a dump truck load of weed from being seized...
of course the Mexcian govt claims it was imposter soldiers... [Roll Eyes]
yeah here it is:

Pot-laden truck creates armed standoff

Daniel Borunda
El Paso Times
Saturday, November 19, 2005

A marijuana-laden dump truck got stuck in the Rio Grande on Thursday evening in Hudspeth County, leading to a standoff between U.S. law enforcement and what appeared to be the Mexican military, sheriff officials said.

"It's a very serious incident," Hudspeth County Chief Deputy Mike Doyal said.

"We are very fortunate (Thursday) night no one got hurt," Doyal said. "Everyone had the presence of mind not to cause an international incident, or start shooting."

The incident began when Border Patrol agents tried to stop the dump truck on Interstate 10, sheriff's officials said. The truck fled to Mexico in the Neely's Crossing area.

The truck got stuck in the riverbed, and the driver took off running. Agents "started to retrieve the bundles (of marijuana) when the armed subjects appeared," said Agent Ramiro Cordero, a Border Patrol spokesman.

Not directly, Glass.....

Congressman Dorite gets a BIG joint contribution (and certain "secret" favors, like a 2 hour a month consultancy for his wife at $80K/year) from The ABCD Association of Engineering Contractors and various corporations that suppily heavy construction materials. It seens the various corporations in the Association and those supplying them are very interested in maintaining the supply of "off the books" below minimum wage wet back labor.

Then too, back home, Congressman Dorite's wife can afford to staff the home ground with wet back cook and a wet back maid and a wet back gardener and a wet back driver to shuttle the kids about while she consults for the Association.

Wouldn't it be foolish for Mrs. Dorite to pay minimum wage to the native born Mexican Juan and his wife Carla from across town? And why would the Congressman not agree. After all, he doesn't even have to show pretense at being civil to the wet backs. If he hired Juan and Carla, he'd have to actually notice their poverty.
