Source: BBC, well one hope is the BBC has the numbers wrong..
I do not trust the BBC without comfirmation from other sources...
If true, that could mean a closure of the Pipeline..... A re-inspection of the data from all the recent inspections will probably have to be done..Not Good.

usually? one finds corrosion everywhere once it starts..
too bad they didn't coat the inside of the pipe with plasma charged glass..... that don't corrode...
The source of the spill was a half-centimetre hole apparently caused by internal corrosion in the five-kilometre line that leads to the trans-Alaska oil pipeline. It is not known when the leak started.
To date, workers have recovered 200 300 litres - or 1 260 barrels - of crude. The effort has been slowed in recent days by wind-chilled temperatures that dipped to more than -56.67 degrees Celsius.
"It's a significant spill. The volume is large, but the footprint is small," Giguere said. "It's contained and controlled, which is the really good news."

Understood. For those that don't trust the BBC, here's the story from Reuters.

418'x418'... I would hardly call that "massive".
IMO? The folks at the BBC are a bunch of bloody wankers.

Of course you "would hardly call that "massive".
But then, you still believe there are tons and tons of chemical weapons; armed biological warheads, resting on platforms aimed at the the U.S., and capable of reaching Denver; and thousands of nuclear bombs, not to mention facilities to make more, hidden somewhere in Iraq and only awaiting a signal from Ben laden before being unleased.
"Massive" is the extreme some will go to in locked goose stepping submission to the Party line.

No need to tell a cooked goose to listen to the trash talk on Fox News, when he is already a devotedly absorbed in their lies and lack of logic.

Another thread being turned into something it's not...big surprise.
"Massive" is a bit of an over statement. As far as oil spills go this is small. The two acres that are affected won't be missed much by the caribou and polar bears. Does it really matter where the news came from or what is believed about weapons in iraq? No.
Two acres, OMG, OMG, OMG.

Rumors are swirling..Not good, but may just blow over as an isolated incidence...
Calmer minds at work on the problem...
Gordon, I honestly do not think the damage is that bad at the present time, but these things take time to properly evaluate..
I've spent time working in the Oil and Gas industry, as a Captain.
Believe me when I say, many of the workers in this industry are 1ST class. They will do what it takes to make it right.

Dust..., the facts are that they insisted over and over that there would be NO leakages from the pipes.
Don't holler "tree hugger" to cover for the BS.
This isn't supposed to happen. Consider that this is just one isolated section and that there are thousands of isolated sections constructed to exactly the same specifications and probably in the same condition.
Now let me see, two acres times thousands is thousands of acres directly covered in oil and for each of them there will be several thousand acres of groundwater contaminated.

Sorry, Dust..., but you are spreading hate and bigotry and lies. I don't mean intentionally. I'm sur you believe whatever they have told you.
You are jumping on a fake band wagon I've watched in action. The timber industry likes to promote that line of BS and I've seen big timber companies caught red handed desrtroying the equipment and driving nails in trees so they had "evidence" to support their claims that "tree huggers" did it.
Don't try to claim knowledge of the timber industry to ward off the truth, I have that knowledge too.....and seen of them driving the spikes and burning the equipment they blamed on "tree huggers".

They missed it...But I gau-run-tee they are checking all data now....
And have Crews are out working they're tails off re- checking that entire Pipeline..
And more than likely there are thousands and thousands more oujt there. They could have checked that"data" before and claimed it wasn't needed.
I'm not buyinbg any of this "holier than thou" characterization of industrial giants that measure everything in dollars and yell any and all conservation measurs are just insifgnificant liberals and "tree huggers", because I have been the guy actually finding the data they were hiding time and again. They are the same as the ones telling us all now that there is no need for restrictions on comercial fishing and yelling it's just "tree hugging" to say otherwise.

------------------------------------------------- OK, here it is....By me ,Dustoff, My wife has worked with un-counted fisherman and loggers from our area..She is a Health Care Professional...
When one of my Bro's survives an accident working as a Commercial Fisherman or logger she is one of the Ladies and Men that help put their shattered bones and mangled bodies back to some kind of function....
I have spent the majority of my life Working as a Commercial Fisherman in the North Western Waters of the Pacific Ocean...
I have also worked the Woods in a Gypo [freelance] logging operation.....Snow, Ice, Heavy rain, mud, setting Chokers in steep Oregon Coastal Range Mountains....
Some Old Growth, but mostly 2nd Growth.
Some of these Douglas Fir Trees hit 250 feet high or more.
Cuts at the stump, 8 feet accross are not unusual....
I can not even count how many MEN I know that have been killed fishing and Logging around here..
So, when some political Hack comes down with a self serving tyraid insult to these Men and women that person is also insulting my intelligence...
These logging companies around here DO NOT Sabatage the woods so loggers will be killed or injured.
Far from it, it's the freaks who have injured loggers by spiking the trees and destroying equipment...And thats not a party line, that is a GD fact.
And some academic with a political Cross to bare, knows absolutly NOTHING in regards to the Commercial Fishing industry in the Pacific Northwest!
You forced it bdgee, now live with it.. You disrespected many good Men and Women....
And you have probably lost a friend or two in the process..
It's up to you to make it right.. I think you really need to think this one thru..
Hey, we're adults, but sometimes even well educated men like yourself can get way way way off of center and lose their course..
To bad this topic got so screwed up..I would of discussed the downside of these logging compamies, but Politics just had to sneak in here and screw up the works..
No, these logging companies are not Saints.
---------------------------------------------- Just for more clarity...
