Well, it rains alot, and Americans are on the Saturday specials at local resturants..Not sure if they serve Americans with White or Red Wine though...

Costa Rica is cool, but crime is rising, just a little terrorist activity...But they mainly just Rob the Banks, so far. In fact the group that robbed the Bank I think were insurgents from Guatamala...Heard it was a mighty wild gun fight.
Recently my daughter spent 4 months down there surfing, diving,fishing and hiking..She had an easy go of it..[ Costa Rica ]Shes back in Hawaii now.

Totally different world down there bud. Haven't been past the international terminal in Guatemala but it is similar to the rest of Central America from what I've heard.
I'd suggest visiting before you make your decision if you can.
Big cities will have crazy traffic and a huge dicotomy of classes. Gereally lots of poverty, especially in rural areas.
Most people are happy and interested in sharing their culture. Most will only speak Spanish but some may want you to help them with their english as they can get better paying jobs if they speak english well.
I don't know much about the unrest in the area other than it makes the news now and then. You do want to take a few extra precautions until you are familiar with the people and unwritten rules. Don't travel alone, especially if you are a woman. Don't get drunk and take a Taxi home alone...good way to lose your wallet. Be prepared that some people may give you trouble because you are American. Etc. Etc.
Seurity forces will be visable in important areas walking around with machine guns. Especially around banks, but leave them alone and they will do the same to you.
Bribery is not uncommon but I have no knowledge there and I don't encourage it.
I've heard that the volcano's there are huge! Would be awesome to see.
You will feel like you are in a parallel world for a while when you first get there. Many things will be familiar but totally foreign at the same time. Expect some homesickness and a strong desire for a double cheeseburger Biggie Size now and then.
Does your brother live down there now? That would be good, he could show you the ropes.

Thanks Bigfoot!!.. My brother speaks fluent Spanish and travels there to learn the culture and music..He has friends there that will back us in this endeavor...Beautiful country and people from what he says...Poverty and crime might be a problem but we should be able to handle any security (his friends own a security co.)..Ever been to the Loring Bar?? That is our vision,along those lines...something hip and classy with great music , atmosphere and food and drinks...

Jordan, sounds like a great adventure...'Been on few great adventures around the World myself...
However, on a more serious note...The entire region you are heading for is infested with some really bad actors..
Kidnapping for ransom is a growing industry in many of the once laid back areas South of the boarder..Check with the State Department..
A "Ransom Stash of Cash" is a prudent buisiness requirement if you are serious about being a green buisiness person down there, 'specialy if your a Yankee.
Just paying a "street bribe" to a cop or soldier in Quatemala can be a VERY DANGEROUS thing to do unless ya really know, whats what...Tex, I think is speaking mostly of Mexico.
A fella has to keep in mind, the Drug Cartels and political forces are merging as one...There is no Clear Chain of Command anymore..
Also Jordon, I have been a Surfer since about 13 yrs old...Surfed some very remote spots around the World...My daughter is now in the International Surf scene, her and her boyfreind really know the ropes in Central America...
These young folks and their parents are telling me "things are changing" FAST! Do Not Flaunt your money!
